Sue, Sorry, I didn't say which name. Czyzjewski is the one I saw. Diane
Sue, I have looked at records for Gross Lichtenau, West Prussia, which is now Lichnowy, Poland. That name or one very similar was on that film. That film number is 587515. Hope you find what you are looking for. I found a treasure of info on this film. Diane

Dear Group I have been a member of this group for sometime but have never posted a request before. I have been most impressed not only with the collective knowledge of this group but with the willingness of its members to share. From the advice and links provided by the group members I have been able to locate the possible location in West Prussia from which my ancestors migrated. Now I have hit a road block and am hoping for some advice. Background: The Family names I am researching: Ciezewski/Czyzjewski (and variants) – given names of (I believe siblings) Marian (1845 -?) (my great-great grandfather), Anton (1830) (married Catherine Komiski), John (married Eva Sange), Agnes (who married John Bendyk) Rutkowski Franceska (1948-1901) my great-great grandmother Jan (born abt 1827) (possibly her Father, Marie his wife), Jan R (born about 1857) (possibly her brother) Passenger records from Baltimore indicate they traveled from Bremen They settled in St. Louis. I have extensive records on this family in the US but am having trouble connecting to the location in West Prussia. St. Louis Catholic Church records indicate that My great-grandmother, Veronica Czyzjewski was born in Marienwerder now Kwidzyn. This is both a city and a province. Her sister, Bronislawa, was born in Skarlin Franceska, their mother, my great-great grandmother, was born in Peterwice. The Problem From the Shetlseeker site (recommended from one of this group) I have discovered that the City of Marienwerder is about 15 miles from Skarlin. So I thought that maybe my relatives came from the province of Marianwerder. However Skarlin is in Skarlin Province. Then there are no Peterwice. There is a town once called Gross Peterwitz within 15 miles of Marienwerder City. FamilySearch.org has not been of help in locating the any of the above. I am confused as to how to tackle this problem. I had expected to find one place from which my family came. But it is apparently not the case although I can not believe that they moved around that much! And with such distances between locations! Does anyone on this list know the region and could give me some help sorting all this out. I would also appreciate any advice on which records to search. Thank you for any help provided Sue Squires

Hello Sandy I did not find the exact William C. Reinhard in the LDS IGI records. However the LDS microfilms have several places that You should be interesed in , as follows; Germany, Preußen, Hessen-Nassau, Dillenburg - Church records Titles Kirchenbuch, 1571-1876 Evangelische Kirche Dillenburg (Dillkreis) Kirchenbuch, 1741-1761 Evangelische Kirche. Hof Gemeinde Dillenburg (Dillkreis) Kirchenbuch, 1809-1903 Katholische Kirche Dillenburg (Dillkreis) Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1817-1874 Evangelische Kirche Dillenburg (Dillkreis) The second church records are not in Your time era , however the other church records , are in Your time era. Order the films and view them at the LDS library , when the films arrive , in about 2 weeks. The will be in German , however You will be looking for a name and a time , the volunteers should know someone who can translate the record , when You find the right entry record. Apologies to the list that the url I sent didn't seem to work. Thanks to Roger for setting the record straight and giving us the one that does. And finally, thanks to LGO who drew our attention to this in the first place. It was certainly something I'd not seen in my 7+ years of dipping in to the LDS web site. Dorothy, You need more information before you can start looking in German records. You have the name of a large area of Germany where your ancestor came from, and it's a tempting trap to start jumping into those records looking for the family origins. But don't do it! I always tell people that they need the following information BEFORE they try to skip the pond into European records; 1.) The name of the ancestor and their birth date. 2.) The name of the parents and/or siblings to serve as confirming info when German records are used. 3.) The name of the city/town/village/Dorf where the ancestor came from. That last item is the great paradox of European research - you have to already know where the ancestor came from to find the family origins! Sad, but true . . . Fortunately, all three of those items I listed above can be found in the records of the ancestor's new country. Even for females. It can sometimes take a lot of work to find (months or years), but once known it's relatively easy to find the family in the old country. You mentioned New Orleans in the family history. If that's a family locale for many decades then you're in luck because there are a great many New Orleans records that survive to this day (even after Hurricane Katrina) and they may very well hold the answers you need. Of course, LDS has microfilmed a great many of them that you can rent at your nearest Family History Center. Stay with it in U.S. records and you'll have success. Diligence is paramount! :) Good luck, LGO
-----Original Message----- >From: David A Lord <griff1n@clara.co.uk> > >Here is the url for those who may want to access the document that was >mentioned in the recent message – I found it quite a search to find this: To David and Prussia-Roots; Considering the document contains volumes of research information for genealogists, and considering it is free to download, "quite a search" is a small price to pay. The reason I mentioned the research guide the way I did in my original reply this morning, and NOT include a URL to download the document, is because I know there are so very many researchers who have only used the LDS web site to search databases. LDS offers so much more. Database searches (at LDS or elsewhere) are only about 5% to 10% of a genealogist's work. I wanted readers on this list to explore the LDS web site a bit and see more of what is available to them. Serving up a hyperlink totally defeats that purpose. Having said that, I now see that I should have listed instructions to give folks a helping hand in finding the document . . . but I had to leave for an appointment. Some of us still have to work. So, here's the info on how to find the various German research documents at the LDS web site (Yes, there is more than one research document - which people would never know by clicking on a URL to download one) . . . Go to the LDS web site and click on the following in this order . . . 1.) "Search" tab at top of home page. 2.) "Research Helps" on blue bar. 3.) Select the first letter of the locale you're interested in in the boxed alphabet at the top. In this case, "G" for Germany. 4.) Now, scroll down and find "Germany" to see all the documents LDS offers about German research. The ones with [PDF] after the title can be downloaded for free. The others can be purchased for a nominal cost at your nearest LDS Family History Center. Hopefully people will follow those steps and see that LDS has research guides for almost all 50 of the United States, and for many countries outside the U.S., that they can also download. While genealogy is a ton of common sense, researchers will never succeed without taking the time to read and learn (or attend lectures) on the records of where their ancestors lived. LDS research guides are just the first step in that process. Good luck to all, LGO
