Dear Listers, Can anyone tell me where or who I should contact for the the Civil Records for the town Wissulke, West Prussia (now Wiesiolka, PL)? I have seen a number of references on the Internet to such a records office but I am in the dark as how to proceed. Thank you, Bette

I just found a couple of messages on the Rootsweb message boards posted by "Vicki" in regard to her gggpa Stanislaw Sobiechowski who live in Chicago after he immigrated. I can provide her info on that family if she is out there and will contact me. Anettka
In my own tree files, I enter the what would have been appropriate during the time of immigration of my target individual(s). Unfortunately, each province has gone through a bevy of changes both in land area and names not including the government in control. This can be a mind bending experience to put it mildly. Very difficult at times!! The family was living here from the late 1600's to mid 1800's. I want to enter the location of Oestrich, Östrich into my genealogy program, but don't know how to phrase it. According to Wikipedia, Wiesbaden is in the State of Hessen, Germany According to Wikipedia, Mainz is in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany What should I enter? Was it formerly Hessen, and now Rhineland-Palatinate? What Kreis (county) would it be in then and now? Would it be Kreis Rheingau back then? Hi Robert, Thanks for your input. I also like to enter what has been appropriate at the time of the birth, etc. But, I also like to enter what it is today. From what I found, and from what info I received from someone else, I plan on writing it this way, at least until I find a better way. Hi Sandy, I think (maybe?) you should pursue your Reinhard family in the Nassau area. My Zeutzius family came from a village called Oestrich, near Mainz, near the Rhein. This area was also located in the "Dukedom of Nassau" and/or "Kingdom of Saxony". Anybody, please jump in and correct me if I am wrong, or if you have more to add. >From what I found on the Wikipedia website: "During the next centuries several states named Nassau emerged. One of those counties was Nassau-Dillenburg, from where the House of Orange-Nassau originated" Sandy, you mentioned in one of your messages: "grandfather of the above siblings was a Johann Chrisitan Reinhard born in 1730 in Dillingburg" So maybe Nassau-Dillenburg and the Dillingburg you mentioned were the same area? Hope this helps, Ruth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Nassau Nassau (state) >From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Duchy of Nassau) Jump to: navigation, search For other uses, see Nassau (disambiguation). Nassau was a German state within the Holy Roman Empire and later in the German Confederation. Its ruling dynasty, now extinct in male line, has been the House of Nassau. Nassau, originally a county, emerged on the lower Lahn river in what is today Rhineland-Palatinate. The town of Nassau was founded in 915. The castle of Nassau was built in 1125, and since 1160 the county was named after the town where the castle was located. In 1255 Nassau was divided for the first time. During the next centuries several states named Nassau emerged. One of those counties was Nassau-Dillenburg, from where the House of Orange-Nassau originated. Another was Nassau-Weilburg, whose reigning house now reigns in Luxembourg. Due to the extinction of most lines, Nassau became a united duchy again in 1806. In 1866 it was annexed by Prussia and incorporated into the Province of Hesse-Nassau. Today, all Houses of Nassau are extinct in their original male line. I have had success in finding passenger list via my local library where I can access Ancestry.com Library version. Also be sure you are checking not just New York as port of entry. Many immigrants during that time period entered the U.S. via Baltimore.
is there anyway to have someone look up the last name Grucza in a phone book in the Pelplin area? my ancestors came from a small village named Getomie near Pelplin in the 1880's. all contact with the Grucza's in Europe has been lost. since it is not a common last name, i was hoping that any individuals in the area with that surname might be somehow related. Hello. I'm new to the list and hoping someone might be able to help me. Someone on another list suggested I join this list and ask my questions. My ggrandfather, Heinrich Carl Meinzen, emigrated from Prussia/Hanover in 1866 and arrived in the U.S. in June of that same year. I have been unable to find him on a passenger list, though I have found a man named Ernst Meinzen who has the same age, occupation, and date of arrival. I don't know if they are the same man or not. Does anyone know whether individuals leaving Prussia needed paperwork or passports to leave the country during this time period? I've heard conflicting information. If there are emigration records, does anyone know where they can be found? I have more questions but will post them individually to make it easier for those who may respond. Thank you for any help you can give.

I have been most impressed not only with the collective knowledge of this group but with the willingness of its members to share. From the advice and links provided by the group members I have been able to locate the possible location in West Prussia from which my ancestors migrated. Now I have hit a road block and am hoping for some advice. Background: The Family names I am researching: Ciezewski/Czyzjewski (and variants) – given names of (I believe siblings) Marian (1845 -?) (my great-great grandfather), Anton (1830) (married Catherine Komiski), John (married Eva Sange), Agnes (who married John Bendyk) Rutkowski Franceska (1948-1901) my great-great grandmother Jan (born abt 1827) (possibly her Father, Marie his wife), Jan R (born about 1857) (possibly her brother) Passenger records from Baltimore indicate they traveled from Bremen They settled in St. Louis. I have extensive records on this family in the US but am having trouble connecting to the location in West Prussia. St. Louis Catholic Church records indicate that My great-grandmother, Veronica Czyzjewski was born in Marienwerder now Kwidzyn. This is both a city and a province. Her sister, Bronislawa, was born in Skarlin Franceska, their mother, my great-great grandmother, was born in Peterwice. The Problem From the Shetlseeker site (recommended from one of this group) I have discovered that the City of Marienwerder is about 15 miles from Skarlin. So I thought that maybe my relatives came from the province of Marianwerder. However Skarlin is in Skarlin Province. Then there are no Peterwice. There is a town once called Gross Peterwitz within 15 miles of Marienwerder City. FamilySearch.org has not been of help in locating the any of the above. I am confused as to how to tackle this problem. I had expected to find one place from which my family came. But it is apparently not the case although I can not believe that they moved around that much! And with such distances between locations! Does anyone on this list know the region and could give me some help sorting all this out. I would also appreciate any advice on which records to search.
