    2. A special thanks to all who have responded to my queries on city locations in Germany. A very knowledgeable gentleman has emailed me information about all the cities I have questions on. My next problem is how to get records from Germany. I have the families here. How do I find their parents in Germany? Thanks again. Sue Schroeder

    2. Wendy Fischbach
    3. Hello, I am a recent subscriber to this mailing list. I am looking for information about my ggg-grandmother. Her name was Henrietta Radke and she emigrated from West Prussia in 1891 according to U.S. Census records. According to the North Dakota, USA, Department of Health Death Index, she was born 24 Feb 1866 and died 25 Mar 1938 in Richland County, North Dakota, USA. My living grandmother shared that Henrietta came to the United States alone as the only daughter. She married my ggg-grandfather, Michael Wagner, in Joliet, IL on Nov 1892.He also arrive alone as the only son emigrating from Bavaria, Germany in 1890. They did not know each other before arriving in the US. Henrietta's naturalization papers were filed under my ggg-grandfather, Michael Wagner, as was the process until 1922. First papers look like they were filed in 1907 and final papers in 1910. At this time, I am waiting for the arrival of a copy of those papers. I would greatly appreciate any information about Henrietta Radke and her family. Regards, WFischbach To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. -Anatole France ____________________________________________________________________________________ Expecting? 3. In my searching for LORCK I mentioned I found the ancestral file on the LDS site. I am aware that most of these findings are done by family historians and sent on to the Mormon site...... However, I do know Johanne, my grfathers sister did come to England for a time. My mother had pictures of her from a studio in Germany. When she came and or when she left I could not establish as there were no records of incoming passenger lists from Germany to England. I was not able to find lists to search for her or her brother returning to Germany. I am also aware that their birthplace (Konigsberg, Ostpreussen, Germany )is considered almost impossible to research due to the wars and the realigning of German territories. I am knowledgeable in regard to the LORCK & BESSEL lines going back in time in Germany, I just can't seem to go forward. I was fiddling around with a German search engine a while back with the name LORCK and came across an article that gave me the name of an architect in Berlin responsible for designing the Wal Marts in the area, his name was Bessel Lorck. I have not been able to make contact. Thank you so much for your interest and response DEL

He is my grandfather. >His AFN file number is IBQH-IKQ. >The LORCK family has a huge ancestral file. Del, I hope you have more to go on than the findings in Ancestral File from LDS. That database is pretty worthless and chock full of errors. You couldn't pay me to use info from it. I volunteered at an LDS FHC for 10 years. LDS has two main databases, the IGI and Ancestral File. The IGI is based upon church member submissions and extraction projects. Through my experience, I would guess that the IGI has about a 75% to 85% accuracy rate. The Ancestral File was created purely from family contributions from John Q. Public. There was zero done by LDS to verify anything in it. If it has a 50% accuracy rate I'm richer than Bill Gates. I tried to help far too many FHC patrons over the years verify information from an Ancestral File finding and it didn't take long to find erroneous information. It won't take long to find your family tree full of someone else's ancestors using Ancestral File. Sure, we all want clues to our ancestry, but if the source is that full of errors a researcher will end up spending more time chasing dead ends than they would if they followed proper research methodology. >My grandfather emigrated to England, and became a British subject in 1899. >He had various addresses in and around London until approx. 1930. >I last found him mentioned in the latest British census with my grandmother >FANNY (Hutchings) LORCK. >I have not found a marriage cert for them. Nor have I been able to find >his death cert. in England. My mother claimed he was residing in a home for >the blind when she emigrated to the USA in 1930. You don't have near enough information yet, Del, to locate your grandfather in German records. You need to exhaust records for his time in England, first. To find ancestors in German records, a researcher needs 1.) Name and date of birth of the ancestor, 2.) City/town/village of origin, and 3.) Names of parents or siblings to use as confirming information. All of this information can be found 90% of the time in the records of the immigrant's new country. Trying to find them in German records before having this information will prove a tremendous waste of time. >I am looking now to find present day relatives from his family in Germany. >It occurs to me he might have returned to Germany. >In my research to date no member of this family emigrated to the USA. except my mother. >Kindly suggest in which direction I should concentrate on to find these relatives. This is premature, Del. You need to find the three pieces of info I listed above and then locate your grandfather in German records. From there you can trace the family forward in order to locate present day relatives. Without that information and without following that process, "connecting" with any relatives online will have the same amount of accuracy as simply typing in all the entries for LORCK from the German telephone book. I don't think you want that. I think you want to find your ancestors and find true current day relatives. Focus on records for your grandfather in England. He may or may not have died there, but he certainly spent a great part of his life there. Did he become a British subject? If so find his naturalization papers. Did he ever get a passport? You might look for that first because they would lead to the naturalization papers. What about church records? The 1901 and 1911 census? Did he serve in the military? Many questions to be answered before delving into German records and finding the current day family. It would probably be a wise investment to purchase a book on British research. After all, how will you find the answers you seek if you don't know where to look? Even with the Internet, what you want to accomplish is not a fast process. It took me 3 years, and 6 years, respectively to find and PROVE two branchs of the family in Germany and then go visit them. We won't even talk about the almost 200 reels of microfilm I had to rent from LDS for this work. But to actually meet the current day family, and walk on the family farm where my ancestors were born were experiences beyond compare, especially when you can prove relationship. Good luck, LGO

His AFN file number is IBQH-IKQ. The LORCK family has a huge ancestral file. My grandfather emigrated to England, and became a British subject in 1899. He had various addresses in and around London until approx. 1930. I last found him mentioned in the latest British census with my grandmother FANNY (Hutchings) LORCK. I have not found a marriage cert for them. Nor have I been able to find his death cert. in England. My mother claimed he was residing in a home for the blind when she emigrated to the USA in 1930. I am looking now to find present day relatives from his family in Germany. It occurs to me he might have returned to Germany. In my research to date no member of this family emigrated to the USA. except my mother. Kindly suggest in which direction I should concentrate on to find these relatives. Thank you for your interest. 3. This is the first time I have posted on this board. I am seeking information on my ancestor Johann Christian Steffenhagen, probably from the Pillkallen region of East Prussia. His birth date should have been around 1810 or 1811. I have documents about his death, but none about his birth, christening, or marriage. He was Lutheran. If there is anyone else in this group who is researching the Steffenhagen name, I would like to hear from you. Edward Richter

    3. I'm looking for information about descendants of Hans Friedrich Jöhnk, born 2 March 1836 in Osdorf, Eckernförde, S-H. He lived in and around Osdorf and Gettorf and was my great-grandfather. One of his nine children, my grandfather Rudolph Friedrich, was born 28 April 1866 in Osdorf and came to the U.S. from Gettorf via Hamburg in 1888. Some of his siblings remained in Prussia/Germany so I likely have cousins there from whom I'd like to hear. My 67-marker DNA test is on file at Family Tree DNA (www.ftdna.com) and I'm in Haplogroup I1a. 3. Jackie - Sorry. I presumed there was a search for a place named "Farenwaldt". I didn't realize you were looking for a person named Gotlieb Seidel. Thanks for clarifying what/who the search was for. I'll poke around for what I can find. Bea JD22294@aol.com wrote: > Bea: > > Thanks for trying. My search of the LDS library microfilms shows Raddatz being in Prussia, in Pommern. There was only one listing for Raddtaz. The search for Radacz had the exact same results. Those microfilmed church records start in 1810, almost a decade BEFORE Carl was born. See . . . http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=448875&subject_disp=Germany%2C+Preu%C3%9Fen%2C+Pommern%2C+Raddatz+%2D+Church+records&columns=*,0,0 There were many listings for "Stargard" so I picked the one listed in Prussia, in Pommern and those church records go back several centuries. However, the baptism records seem to be missing the year 1827 from my quick survey. You should look at it more carefully. This may not be the Stargard you want, but it I picked it because it, like Raddatz, was in Pommern. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=396806&subject_disp=Germany%2C+Preu%C3%9Fen%2C+Pommern%2C+Stargard+%2D+Church+records&columns=*,0,0 Good luck, LGO
