Hi Herb. I FOUND THEIR SHIP PASSENGER LIST !!!!!!!!!!!!!! On ancestry.com, I found them indexed under FERKE. But, only the males were indexed. I have no clue as to why. But, Elisa and Wilhelmine (I assume a daughter), ARE listed on the actual passenger list. Then, I also found them on the Castle Garden Website, Indexed under Ferk. Elisa and Wilhelmine WERE indexed here. I can send you the ship image offline if you want it. But, you might want to check out this website from USGenWeb. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/hutchinson/natural.txt These are some indexes for Hutchinson County Naturalizations taken from some volumes from originals at the S.D. Archives. Johann is not listed here, but I also see that there is no immigration year for 1885 listed. So, maybe Johann is in one of the other volumes not listed on this website. Hallo Herbert, I guess, you've already tried to trace back your Johann Teske to the passenger lists of his arriving ship ? Paris in Bessarabia not too far away from the port of Odessa (something like 150 klicks). I didn't check further, but since the German community was pretty much cut off from anything in the main land, it seems likely that Odessa was the port of embarkation. Try that... Herbert, I am assuming that this couple in South Dakota in the 1900 census was your Johann and Elisabeth. If so, then there seems to be a declaration of intent for Johann in Hutchinson County. Maybe you can find what you are looking for in this document. Keep in mind -- some of those European ships first went to New York, unloaded a few passengers there, but then proceeded to Baltimore with the rest of the passengers and where the ship's manifest was filed. I have seen passenger lists in the Baltimore arrival collection where there was a notation in a manifest that indicated a few of the ship's passengers had disembarked in New York. So, passenger arrival films themselves are always the best source -- and even they sometimes have what we believe are "mistakes." Karen B.
