Hi Bronwyn Thanks so much for the information. I'll go through it all and work out what I need to do next. I certainly would like to trace further back and hopefully my grandmother's birth records will provide some leads. I'd be most interested in your recommendation for a Polish researcher. Some idea of cost would also be really great. Thanks again Bronwyn! Cheers, Maria :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bronwyn Klimach" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, May 09, 2009 10:32 PM Subject: Re: [PRUSSIA-ROOTS] Birth record 1911 - Narzym Hi Maria, You can usually contact Polish Archives in English, but their reply will be in Polish; to date the archives do not accept credit card payment. You should be able to find contact details and whether these records are extant from their site: http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.php?l=en You may already have realised that if the records you require are less than 100yrs old they will not be in Polish Archives. This article will give you the information you need: https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Poland_Archives_and_Libraries and there is more background about Civil Registration here: https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Poland_Civil_Registration-_Vital_Records Are you likely to then wish to trace the family further back in time? If so I would suggest that you start of by hiring a Polish researcher, as in the long run this will save you a lot of time and contacting different offices etc. If you would like a recommendation I am happy to do so. Kind regards, Bronwyn Klimach. Creel, There are some excellent online articles to get started - google 'beginning genealogy' and so on for ideas. I would also advise you to find out as much as you can from present day family members (especially the older ones), asking if they will allow you to copy photos and documents they many have, however unimportant they may seem. G'day David, The Federation of East European Family History Societies (Feefhs) < www.feefhs.org > has a "map room". One of their maps is "East Prussia 1882" < http://www.feefhs.org/maplibrary/german/ge-eprus.html > which will help you. After the First World War, East Prussia was separated from the rest of Germany by the "Polish Corridor" which gave Poland access to the Baltic. After the Second World War, East Prussia was divided between Poland which took the south-western half and the Soviet Union (now the Russian Republic) which took the north-eastern half. The old provincial capital of Königsberg was renamed Kaliningrad by the Russians. David... along with the other replies to you message, try here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaliningrad Most of what is presently the Kaliningrad Oblast (Russian territory rule) closely resembles the land area that was Ostpreussen. It today is between Poland and Lithuania, not close to Hamburg. But, at one time (depending upon the time frame), Prussia (including Ostpreussen) went from the French border to Lithuania. Many of the duchies and kingdoms of what we consider 'Germany' today never were under Prussian rule. That issue would definitely need a time line per area as borders fluctuated. David: Germany did not exist in 1860. Prior to 1871 the area comprising what we call Germany was made up of numerous countries/areas - Prussia, East Prussia, Baden, Bavaria, to name a few. Probably your source is referring to the area known as East Prussia which would cover parts of what is now Poland, Russia and other eastern areas. Too complicated to give a short answer. I'm sure you can find maps for the various time periods including 1860. Sheila K.

David, Ostpreußisches is an adjective referring to something from Ostpreußen (East Prussia). At the time you refer to, East Prussia was more like a region or grouping of states. It was located about where the Baltic countries are today. See the Wikipedia article on East Prussia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Prussia Hope that helps, Paul near Portland, Oregon
