Was Saxony part of Prussia in the 1860s? Thank you. Doris Wheeler -- "To forget one's ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root." - Chinese proverb
I would find their paperwork: becoming a American, death, Obit from a Newspaper and the county they lived in where they lived. Did they come thru Ellis Island or another port? I will check Ancestry for you on the 1880's. Kathy in NJ In a message dated 8/14/2009 10:24:56 A.M. Prussia is far to big to search just by surnames, even uncommon ones. The clues will be near at hand, if not easily found. I'm sure Maureen's link will give you places you can spend many more years looking! Good luck, Bronwyn. Aaah - you made my day, Bron, as you usually do! People's stories are just so interesting, and one never knows where they will lead. Got an e-mail through SCGS a couple days ago from a guy named Kerrihard (what's THAT heritage?) descended from Kerschard - okay - that's Germanic. At one point they were in what was then a little burg called Red Oak, Iowa, a sparsely populated Midwestern state just north of Missouri. I found a History of Montgomery County (where Red Oak is) and there are 3 upstanding guys named Kerrihard in there - and a whole lot of really hilarious, colorful characters, including one gay blade who was the toast of polite society and very popular, until somebody discovered that he was a woman (didn't say how)- next seen in Alaska........... I know Red Oak solely from a lunch stop there on my first long, wonderful, life-changing trip with a friend named Georgette to CA and back to St. Louis a long time ago. I asked for a soda - what? A soda pop - what? A Pepsi - oh, you mean sugar water! It was the wild west when this history was written, about 1850-1860. And I hope that Mr. Ladzik will pass it along - RAOGK style. He's in a good place to do that, right? How did the travelers make out? Maureen In a message dated 8/14/2009 7:18:32 A.M. Hello Mike - I think you shall have to concentrate your searches in Minnesota and work your way back from what you know and have documented with primary sources; there is no way to find someone in Prussia without knowing the village. Please give this a try for many, many, many avenues to search, from an expert, Dr. Don Watson: http:// members.cox.net/hessen (not limited to Hessen) "All the sources in America" should include libraries of all kinds, books, stuff not on the Internet. And it will help to look at the changing maps of Prussia and its history. They're waiting for you to find them! Maureen Schoenky In a message dated 8/14/2009 6:27:40 A.M. Mike, I've done it both ways and, trust me, if you can possibly in any way scrounge up something from here, you'll be better off. Have you absolutely positively without any doubt in your mind ruled out the existence of church records in Minnesota? For the German immigrants, those *so* often have the origination clue that you need -- especially the confirmation records, in my experience. If you need help tracking down what parishes got consolidated into which and who the magic individual is that keeps the really old records at home, we can probably find someone to point you at the answers. Otherwise, do you have an immigration date? Ships records, at sending and receiving end, are your next best bet, I think. --Kristi, in Iowa

Thomas - I tried to find them in a Library close to where I live, but only found one of them - the seventh edition, 1972-1973, but the closest one was almost 800 miles away. Check: WorldCat (world wide library catalog) for the 1972-1973 one that I found. One of the libraries that own it may copy the pages for you and email or send them by regular mail for a reasonable fee. The fifth and sixth editions must be just to old and libraries did not keep them, but you may want to check more closely on World Cat then I did. I have posted this message on the rootsweb message boards for Prussia, East Prussia, West Prussia, and Prussia Pomerania and included the photos. I have a had a response from a gentleman who states that he is a professional researcher. He believes the name on the stone is Radumein and that it's probably the English spelling for the village of Radomin. I think that Ultman's American wife didn't know how to spell it and the headstone carver wrote what he heard. I can't tell what the name is on the stone, but perhaps some of you can.
