    1. [PRUITT-L] Samuel Pruitt, Jr./Limestone Settlement

    3. I am seeking information on Samuel Pruitt, Jr., born 1761 in Pittsylvania County, VA. He is listed as living in the "Cherokee Intruders" Limestone Settlement in 1809. The 1830 census lists him as living in Cherokee, GA. He married Kezia Stokes (Connelly), widow of Charles Connelly of NC. Children were: Hezekiah, Lucy, Samuel III, Elizabeth, Joseph, Polly, and John Willis. Samuel died in 1845 in Franklin County, GA. The land on which he lived later became part of Banks County, GA when Banks County was formed. Does anyone know where the Limestone Settlement was located? Those people living in the settlement were required to have official permission from and be registered with the U.S. government's Cherokee agent. Deb Kroll

He married Lavina Walters in Pittsylvania Co., VA, 1 Jan. 1789. In 1798, he moved to Franklin Co., GA, with brothers Phillip and Benjamin (at least I have found the three of them in Franklin Co. tax digests in that time period). A younger brother Joseph, from which my family descends from, followed later and died in 1805. I've never heard of the Limestone Settlement, although, I would presume it to be near the Gove River SE of Homer, GA, on property (or near property) where Willis Hardin, Jr. currently lives. Mr. Hardin, who descends from Susan Adella Pruitt the youngest child of John Willis Pruitt, lives on the old Samuel Pruitt, Jr. place. (John Willis Pruitt was the only child of Samuel Pruitt, Jr. and his second wife Keziah Stokes Connally.) Surely, someone with a historical bent in Homer could answer the question about the Limestone Settlement. Perhaps Mr. Willis Harden or Mr. Ray Pruitt who lives nearby could answer that question, Deb. Deb, you reported that you were "looking into Limestone Settlement being near Gainesville, GA in the Limestone Springs area there. There is a "History of Banks County" in a nearby library which I can check, and surely, if Limestone were in Banks Co., it would be in the book." I would appreciate knowing what you find. I suspect that Cherokee Intruders refers to all who came into NE Georgia as that was Cherokee land. I don't know about the Limestone Settlement, but I feel certain that Samuel Pruitt, Jr. settled on the Grove River. From my notes taken on my 1980 trip to Georgia, I copied from the 1802 Franklin Co., Tax Digest #848 Samuel Prewet 100A on Grove River. Eventually he had a large plantation there. It is reported that he gave each of his children 500 acres upon the date of their marriage. Of course, Samuel didn't acquire all of that land at once and the Tax Digest record indicates a modest beginning. Sons Hezekiah and Robert Walters Pruitt had sizable land holdings in the area. All indications that I received from direct contact from descendants who lived in the area or on part of the original property was that he never lived elsewhere in Georgia. I examined a copy of the "History of Banks County" about 20 years ago when in Homer, GA, and copied out a few pages dealing with the construction of the courthouse. This was built by John Willis Pruitt and nephew Samuel Walters Pruitt. I hope you learn more about the Cherokee Intruders and the Limestone Settlement and will pass it on. Roger Pruitt
