I have a land abstract for my Prewitt family spanning quite a few years and in this document the surname Prewitt [as we spell it] is written at least 3 different ways. My grandmother's brother decided the family wasn't spelling the name correctly so he changed his spelling to Pruitt. My suggestion to everyone is just look at all the spellings. Many times, the spelling is changed by the Census Taker. Many of the families could not read or write, therefore, they did not know how the name was spelled. Census takers spelled it as they heard it and sometimes, they could not read or write much better than the family. Wanda Ellis wellis@redriverok.com
