I've got the same problem -- even brothers spelled it differently between Prewitt, Pruet and Pruit and sometimes with two "t"s. My great grandfather shows up in the census as Pruitt, but his tombstone is spelled Prewitt. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Tmgadddag@aol.com> To: <PRUITT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 02, 2000 4:12 PM Subject: Re: [PRUITT-L] Pruitt, Prewitt, Pruett, etc and Privitt-Privett > In a message dated 10/2/00 8:31:25 AM Eastern Daylight Time, > mkellyprivitt@ArkansasUSA.com writes: > > > > > Pruitt -Prewit is my mothers family. My mother-in-law's Pruitt line I am researching was spelled Prewitt in the mid-1800s, then Prueitt, Pruett and now Pruitt. My family spell it Preuit, prior generations Pruitt. I descend from Jacob Pruet b. 1761. Some are giving his birth date as 1765. Grave maker in Al. has 1761. I am tracing the family of William Pruitt Sr. who married Mary Martin. Raymond Would you share these with us. In my research during the past eight years, I have documented over 150 ways to spell Pruitt, Prewitt, Privitt, etc. I makes our work very interesting. -- Raymond M. Pruitt
Pruitt -Prewit is my mothers family. Have found it spelled many ways including Privitt-Privett, which is my married name. I have wondered if this is another variation of spelling Pruitt over the years. Has any one else found proof it they are the same family?? Spelling was so bad back then that persons didn't know how their name was spelled on many occasions, thus the different spelling. Am interested to know if this is the same family or different and spellings were spelled wrong in some instances. Marie

It works fine. Must have been her computer. I went right to it. No problem. Might want to try again. Might have been network problems. Could have been busy. Mattie
I am sorry the site did not work. You can probably access it from the Rootsweb home page. I also cannot help with any Morrisett information. I only have Nancy Morrisett ca 1825 Tenn married Jacob Pruitt. She died 11-19-1901 and I believe she was in Christian Co., Mo at that time. There were several Morrisett families in that area and I believe she had a brother there named Richard. I am really stuck on my Pruitts and Morrisetts. Thanks, Kaye

Hi Shelley, If you saw my post on the Pruitt list you know that I am descended from Elizabeth Pruitt born about 1828 in Gibson County, TN to Thomas J Pruitt and Sarah (Sally) Estes. Elizabeth married John P. Gill 1848 in Gibson County, and both lived there the rest of their lives. Both are buried on the Gill plot in Rose Hill Cem. in Humboldt. Elizabeth and John Gill are my GG-GP. What info I have comes from "John Pruitt and Elizabeth Bradford, Their Descendants", by Richard Prewitt, Des Moines, 1998. Page 100 of the above shows Ben Pruett/Pruitt as born 1825 in Granville County, NC. Page 101 quotes the 1850 Census (Gibson County) as follows: Ben Privitt age 24 Born NC Farmer Etha age 29 Born NC William age 3 months Born TN Sarah age 70 Born NC Mary age 27 Born TN It would appear that the William you refer to above was born about March 1850 and not 1857. The Sarah age 70 is surely Sarah Estes Pruitt. I am not sure who the Mary is, although it could be Mary Pruitt born 1821 (another child of Thomas J. and Sarah). This is the extent of information I have on Ben Pruitt/Pruett. If you do not have Richard Prewitt' s book I recommend you secure same. It is not the last word on the Thomas Pruitt line but it is helpful. As I recall it is reasonably priced. Walker K. McCulloch > Hello All, > > I am also a decedent of Thomas J. Hello All, I am also a decedent of Thomas J. PRUETT and Sarah ESTES. I am a decedent of their son Ben PRUETT, b. 1826 and Eathea M. B. SUMMERS, b. 1830. Unfortunately, Richard's PRUITT book stops with Ben PRUETT (who is listed along with Sarah ESTES on the Gibson County, TN Census as Ben PRIVITT). Finding information on this branch has been difficult. Ben and Eathea seem to "disappear," and there is no record of them being buried with their kin in the PRUITT cemetery in Gibson County, TN. They might, of course, be buried in an unmarked grave. I believe that Eathea may be related to William and Polly SUMMERS from Gibson County, but have been unable to prove this. It seemed to me for a long time that their son, my GGG Grandfather William W. (Bud) PRUITT, b. 1857 in Gibson County, was an only child, and that Ben and Eathea died young. Recently, I have found information to the contrary that came from living relatives of William PRUITT. At times, I have had doubts that my William W. PRUITT is indeed the same William PRUITT who is the son of Ben and Eathea. The information is confusing. I would love to compare information with other PRUITT researchers who are researching the Thomas J. PRUETT line or other lines in Gibson County, TN. Here is some new information on my line. Before anyone decides to copy and post this information to a web site, know that much is family lore and may not be correct: 1 Ben Pruett b: 1826 .. +Eathea M. B. Do you per chance show a James Pruitt in Scotland County, Mo. Marrying a Mary Ann Vasser not the first marriage for either of them. Hi, I tried the "Oath" site by clicking on the URL and it came up "not found on RootsWeb". that is not the reason I am writing. I too have Pruitt and Morrisett connections. I am descended from Thomas J. Pruitt and Sarah Estes who came from Granville County, NC about 1826 to Gibson County, TN (just in time to have my GG-GM Elizabeth - who married John P. Gill in 1848). I am also descended from Kiziah Morrisett who married William Stone in TN before 1805. she died 1850 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Montgomery County TN. I have the Pruitt line fairly well documented (thanks to Richard Prewitt' s book(s) on the Pruitt/Prewitt families). It is the Morrisett line that has me stumped. I know there were Morrisett' s in Dickson County, and that this is very likely the line she comes from. There were also Morrisett' s in Humphreys County and would bet that line is related. I just have not been able to find anything to peg her in there. The only real documentaion I found that she even existed is that she sued William for divorce in 1831 (but apparently never left him as they were together in Montgomery County when she died). Her death came from the 1850 Mortality Index. Family lore has her buried in Old Shiloh Cem. in Montgomery County (Just North of the Dickson county line). I have not been able to locate their marriage record --- suspect it occurred in E. Tennessee. Do you have any Morrisett information that might tie in to Kiziah? If so I would surely appreciate hearing from you. Walker K. McCulloch PS: I checked my Pruitt book and didn' t find the above Jacob listed. Must be a different line than mine. > This site was given to me by a friend from another list. This site was given to me by a friend from another list. Since it contains several Pruitt/Prewitt names thought I would post it here. Click here: Oaths of Allegiance-1777 Pittsylvania County, VA I am researching Jacob Pruitt ca 1814 Tenn married Nancy Morrisett.
