Kaye, I have Jacob Pruitt b c 1810 IL who married Parlynee Ruyle (Rule) in Macoupin Co. IL on July 22, 1830. He is the son of Isaac Pruitt B. 1 Dec. 1779, Washington Co., Va. who moved to Tenn. Jacob's father is William Pruitt Sr. b 1714 Va. who married Mary Martin Jacob Pruet b. 1761 N.C. died in Walker Co. Al. on 14 May 1845, and was buried in New Prospect Church Cem. near Haleyville Al. Jacob had prior lived in Green Co. TN. where he married his wife Nancy Agnes Ritchey in Green Co. 12 March 1786, they also lived in Knox Co. TN. By 1818 Jacob had moved to Lawrence Co. Al. and settled on the Byler Road, about 20 miles from Moulton, Al. In c.1824, Jacob moved to Walker Co. Al. A historical marker is at Haleyville. In responce to the variations of spelling names, it shoud be remembered that prior to last 20 years that census takers cam to your house and took the info and that 100 year ago few people could read or write. It was then left up to the taker to spell your name however it looked or sounded to him, hence all the variations. I have the same situation in the spelling of my name within my family ancestory. I don't believe you will make connections with some of the 160 varieties you found. All of those do not belong to the family of Pruitt or however you want to spell it. Most of the spellings will be Pruitt, Pruit, Pruett, Pruet, Prewitt, Prewett. In the beginning there were not that many--only the Prewitt or Prewett-depending on the speller.

It depends a lot on how the Census Taker wrote it down when they were taking the Census. My particular line of Pruett"s has been spelled almost every way that you have put in your subject line. I am searching for information on William Washington Prewitt. The 1900 Cass County, TX Census has the following: William Prewitt, May 1845, 55 M 17 yrs. MO KY VA Octavia, Apr 1860, 40 F 15 yrs. GA GA GA Katie Bell, Nov. 1884 15 F TX MO GA James W., Aug 1886 (family says it is, "June 1885") 13 M TX MO GA J.W., Sept. 1888 11 M TX MO GA Jeff., Aug 1890, 9 M TX MO GA Jno. B., Oct 1892 Jos. L., June 1897 This was my grandfather, James William Prewitt's family. I cannot find a death place for William. His wife, Octavie is buried in Cass County, TX. My father spelled his name Pruitt, his family was Prewitt. There are some others in that family that spelled it Pruitt. It does make it difficult to straighten families out. William Washington Prewitt was born in Sedalia, Pettis County, MO-or so the family says. I cannot find a trace of his birth or death. I am getting conflicting stories from family and others.
