You may be right. I figured since the age given him in the 1910 census would have placed his birth year as 1869 I figured my grandmother had the date right. There's a small family tree in my baby book and John E. Pruitt was listed with the 1869 birthdate, my grandmother Pruitt confirmed the date in the mid-80's. I'll check into the line you spoke of and see if it pans out. I am about to hire a researcher in the area since I cannot seem to find anything on Mary Jane Vasser except that she remarried after her husband was killed and that was in 1863. I know the marriage took place in 1866 and I did find them in Bible Grove, Mo. in the 1870 census along with her two minor children who I have now found but not their mother. No record of her in the cemeteries although her Vasser husband had no stone and I have his estate papers. she may be buried with him and there is just no stone. Hi Joan, I have never checked in Scotland Co. I do know his daughter Orlena Pruitt Ricketts Gooch filed for her pension (CW) in Dent Co., but can find nothing on them there yet either. Thanks. Kaye
Wonder Kaye if he might be related to a John Pruitt who lived in Scotland County in 1866 date range married second wife, Mary ann Vasser in that year? Trying to find what happened to her. In all the Pruitt's of varied spelling he is the only John E. in that County. It is a "very good chance" he is the one you are looking for. (Sometimes it seems too simple?) I wouldn't be concerned about it being off a few years from your birth record that you have on hand, until further research is done and more records are found and collected to compare for age etc. in old records. I have found the ages in census are not always correct, several census have to be compared to come to a close guess on the age in them. A true Bible record is the best proof of age. Army records are not always right, my civil war grandfather complained they wrote his age wrong. He spoke poor english so this could have been a problem when he signed up for the war in 1862. I saw the year was off from what you have on John E. but no doubt, I think it is your john that I sent you. The information I gave you was gathered from Richard A. Prewitt book on "Pruitts in Virginia". Pretty good book to trace a movement in Virginia of ones family from county to county, and when some moved to another state and when and where, also when some moved back to VA. He has in print books on most states the Pruitts of all families lived in. Can someone tell me the name of Richard A. Prewitt's book and where I can get a copy of it? Thanks, Radine
Don, I don't think my direct line leaves Virginia. My dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all born in Danville, Va. I do know my grandfather had lots of brothers & sisters: Leo, Laura, Beulah (Boo), Eddie & Freddie (twins), Claude (my grandfather), Harry, and Eva. I know my dad rembers his Aunt's Laura & "Boo", and I don't think either of them left VA. Not sure though. I have no idea who John's parents or grandparents were or where the family came from before America. There could be lots of cousins in Texas & Oklahoma. :) Rhonda in SD ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donkelly" <donkelly@grovenet.net> To: <PRUITT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 25, 2000 1:39 PM Subject: Re: [PRUITT] (PRUITT) Introduction > Greetings Rhonda. > > Family stories persist that our direct Pruitt line first lived in Colonial > Virginia > ( don't know where they came from or when ) but first documented in > Kentucky, then in Texas, then in Oklahoma, then without father Henry Pruitt > in Arkansas. > > I have school pictures of the children in Oklahoma. > > If your research from Virginia takes you to any of the states I mentioned, > let me know and I will dig out mom's book and provide the names and dates > for you. > > Don Kelly > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "June Waymire Pruitt or Hulon Pruitt" <jwhtpruitt@up-link.net> > To: <PRUITT-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Saturday, November 25, 2000 10:43 AM > Subject: [PRUITT] (PRUITT) Introduction > > > > Rhonda, > > > > Do you have a birth or death date for your JOHN E. My John E. Pruitt was born July 9, 1869 in Danville, VA. He died June 9, 1949. He was still in Danville in 1910 as I found him on the 1910 census. I have no idea who his parents, grandparents, etc... were, and I have no idea where my Pruitt's came from before America (or when they came). More 1850 census Southern Twp. Pittsylvania Co., Pa. Thomas S. Pruet 36 Va. Susan (Epperson) 38 Va. Francis (fe) 13 Va. Sarah 10 Va. Thomas 5 Va. appears to be the first wife. Keep in mind Pittsylvania Co. was formed in 1766-67 from Halifax CO.. Therefore Pruitts of varied spelling would be listed also, and hadn't moved, county changed. When Pittsylvania County was formed from Halifax, there were Prewitt's living in three different parts of the County. In the northwest corner, Byrd Pruitt lived on Straightstone Creek, : in the central portion, Henry Pruitt and Uriah Pruitt Jr. lived on Cherrystone Creek and the Banister River, and in the southern portion, Samuel Pruitt11 lived on Sandy Creek of the Dan River. I hope the information will help you. ----- Original Message ----- From: "rstu" <rstu@saintmail.net> To: <PRUITT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 25, 2000 12:40 PM Subject: Re: [PRUITT] Introduction > No, sorry.
