We'll try a simple question yet another way: On the Cover of each of his Volumes, exactly how does he spell the name?
Many times, the spelling is changed by the Census Taker. Many of the families could not read or write, therefore, they did not know how the name was spelled. Census takers spelled it as they heard it and sometimes, they could not read or write much better than the family. Wanda Ellis wellis@redriverok.com
1) Pruitt or 2) Prewitt ?
I have a land abstract for my Prewitt family spanning quite a few years and in this document the surname Prewitt [as we spell it] is written at least 3 different ways. My grandmother's brother decided the family wasn't spelling the name correctly so he changed his spelling to Pruitt. My suggestion to everyone is just look at all the spellings. Patsy Hand Marci Preuit wrote: > > He is using standard spellings in his titles, as records found in county, > census etc. of the Pruitts can be of many spellings and the same for records > found of in census from 1790 on. > Spellings can change in a family line of Pruitt sir name down through the > generations in a single family line. > For an example,I am a Preuit, my grt grandfather was Pruitt, and five times > grt was Pruet. He died in Danville, VA. I'll see if I can get his death certificate. Thanks for your help. This cannot be my John E. because my John E. was married to Anna Gosney and his son, my grandfather, was born in 1904. So neither John E. in your search can be mine. You must understand that not everyone lived where a census worker could reach, or would bother to reach. My maternal great-grandfather is one of those, Robert Martin of Stuart, VA. My dad said to get to his house you could only drive so far up the mountain and then you had to walk the rest of the way. I found a 1910 census a month ago with my John E. with all the correct information. It would place his birth year at 1869 and it listed his wife as Anna and had all the correct children, including my grandfather (Claude) listed as 6 years old. Which would be correct since he was born in 1904. I'll keep searching. :) Rhonda in SD ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marci Preuit" <katie1@presys.com> To: <PRUITT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 29, 2000 4:19 AM Subject: Re: [PRUITT] Rhonda in SD > Search Results > > > Search Terms: PRUITT (133), E (72515), JOHN (91811) > Database: Virginia 1910 Census Miracode Index > Combined Matches: 1 > > > > State County Enumeration District Name Relation Color Age Birth Place Visit > Relatives > VA Accomack 0001 John E Pruitt Husband W 47 Maryland 0038 Wife Sarah E 43, > Maryland > Daughter Mabel E 15, Virginia > Son John E 13, Virginia > Son Milland E 09, Virginia
He is using standard spellings in his titles, as records found in county, census etc. of the Pruitts can be of many spellings and the same for records found of in census from 1790 on. Spellings can change in a family line of Pruitt sir name down through the generations in a single family line. For an example,I am a Preuit, my grt grandfather was Pruitt, and five times grt was Pruet. To make it more simple, I line mine up as Preuit and make note of name change in the generations into my software. Richard A. Prewitt has his titles with standard spellings he has chosen, the records in his books contained are of varied Pruitt spellings found in the census, court houses, history books etc. and for varied family lines. Hope that helps. I don't see any John E. in N.C. his age., only others much older. In all Va. counties records of Pruitts, he is the only one listed as John E. that I gave you. Check the last census when he was living for where he was. And order his death record for parents names that are listed. It also gives place of birth on it. I heard back from my dad and found out my John E. was NOT born in Danville as my grandmother told me. Dad thinks John was born outside Pittsylvania County and may even have been born in NC. Jim, I don't know who John Pruitt's ancestor was? That is my brickwall. I am checking through other Pruitt names and think he is probably related in some way to a Thomas Pruitt. Thanks, Jeannine
