    1. Pruitt Query?
    2. Alicia Brown
    3. Nora, That sounds good to me but I'll have to check my work before I can post anything. Right now my time has been spent trying to trace a school in (Hobbs?) New Mexico which is supposed to have a "Cowboy Museum". My G-father and some more of the "old-timers" supplied oral histories of the "old" days (early 1900's). I would love to hear or get a copy of these tapes. Will get back to you later on the query. Alicia

    3. Hi To All, I'm glad to see the Pruitt list go back up since I subscribed the day the spammer hit and never got the opportunity to meet any Pruitt researchers. I am a beginner at genealogy, though my husband's family voted me their historian at one of the reunion business meetings. (I did have alot of information on their family, but that was thanks to his grandmother who lived to be 96 years old and never threw a scrap of paper away and allowed me to have access to it). And as far as the Pruit, (one "t") family, I have been lucky to have the groundwork of A.R. Pruit MD who published the book "The Search for David-A Study of the Pruit Family" and oral tapes my grandfather Chester Allen Pruit made before he died. I have a long way to go though to put "meat" on the "bones" of my family tree. I am looking forward to meeting other Pruit's (or Pruitt's) and will be happy to share any information I have. Alicia Brown Quick family info: Myself>Ollie Belle Pruit>Chester Allen Pruit>Marion Wylie Pruit>Samuel Thomas (Tom) Pruit>John Thomas Pruit Other surnames associated with this family: Curry, Wylie, Matthews, and Pittman to name a few.

    3. I have been trying to figure out for years when my 2nd great grandfather changed the spelling of his name three times during his life. These are not random misspellings, but deliberate changes. Thomas Benton Pruett was born to Elizabeth Russell and Elisha Pruett in 1841 in Morgon Co TN.Sometime before 1849 they moved to Fayette Co IL. Elisha died 5 Sept 1849 Elizabeth died sometime before him along with one of their children of cholera. Their ch: Nancy b 1837 in TN --nothing more known. Mary Annis --nothing more known Squire Luna--nothing more known Sarah Jane Pruett b 1844 m Eli Headley Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" b 1844 m Noble Cruse d 19 Jan 1923 in Marion Co IL. Thomas was raised my his father's sister's family Ellender Pruett and John Wilkins. It is with them that he moved to Lyon Co KS sometime before 1860. In 1864 he married Mary Branson in Lawrence KS . He was still using the Pruett spelling. He and Mary had 4 ch: Estella Pruit b 25 Jan 1865 d 29 Apr 1890 Oswego KS Perl Preston Pruitt 2 April 1868 m Gertrude Thompson 1892 d 11 Apr 1914.. Thomas Benton b 8 Jan 1874 m Annis Martin 1895 d 19 Sept 1907 Maudie Pruit b 11 Jul 1880 d 6 Aug 1881. Maudie and Estella's head stone both have the last name of Pruit. Thomas and Mary's marriage is the last record that uses the Pruett spelling. Thomas himself used the spelling Pruit in the military and that is how he was known up until 1900 in Oswego when the spelling changed to Pruitt. Perl and Thomas Benton's names always appears as Pruitt as it is today. Thomas Benton Pruitt Jr. was my great-grandfather. He and Annis Martin had two Children: Otto Perl Pruitt and Stella Ellen Pruitt. I am Otto's grand daugher. After Thomas death Annis married Emory Prewett on 6 March 1918. They moved from Oswego sometime after 1920 first to Hagerman ID then to Klamath Falls OR. I have yet to find out where and when Em Prewett died. I hope this helps someone. Nora

    3. Hi I am glad we're back up and running. I was on the list only a few weeks when Maiser crashed. I always watch for a while before posting. I have information that I am more than willing to share. Maybe we could have a "Most Wanted Pruitt" mailings. Everyone sends a query about the Pruitt/Prewett/Pruett/Pruit that has them stumped. I've seen it done on other lists and it seems to get things going. Nora

    1. PRUITT list is back in business!
    2. Hi, everybody! Larry and Karen and the Rootsweb folks have gotten the Pruitt list moved to Rootsweb. What you see below is information that I cut and pasted from the letter that Rootsweb sent to me as list owner. Please note: if list messages addressed to you bounce 4 times (and I think that's four CONSECUTIVE times, not just four random bounces over a period of time), the software will AUTOMATICALLY unsubscribe you. This could be a problem if you go on vacation and your mailbox fills up while you're gone, causing email to bounce. It also may be a problem for those of us on AOL; I'm subscribed to the list both here and through my AOL account, so I'll try to keep up with bounces and see what we can do. Now, before y'all go on to read the subscribe/unsubscribe and posting instructions, I have a question. This is not a rhetorical question; answers are expected: Before Maiser crashed, the Pruitt list had NO regular activity. Yet I regularly got email from various list members that said, "Oh, so-and-so and I just traded our info and filled in lots of blank spaces." Oh, really? Folks, the whole purpose of this list is to share your information WITH THE LIST. So my question to each of you is this: Are you, or are you not, willing to share the information that you have with EVERYONE on the list? And akin to that: Do you plan to participate in this list? It's my understanding that Rootsweb normally charges a fee for hosting a surname mailing list, and they've waived those fees for the lists that have been moved over since Maiser crashed. However, if this list is going to have 40 to 50 subscribers and if it's still going to average fewer than 3 postings a month, I'm going to ask the folks at Rootsweb to close down the list and free up the resources for other researchers. So let's hear it from each of you - posted TO THE LIST, please. Do you plan to participate, and what are your ideas for making this list a useful and growing resource? And now on to the clips from the sample welcome letters. I. Your new RootsWeb mailing list: OK, good news: your mailing list is ready to roll. Briefly (very), people can subscribe to your list in mail mode by sending a message to [email protected] that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If they prefer digest mode, they should send the command instead to [email protected] To unsubscribe, they should send the command "unsubscribe" to Pruitt [email protected] (if in mail mode) or [email protected] (if in digest mode.) To switch from one mode to the other, they should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. There is no "no mail" mode -- if they want messages to stop, they should simply unsubscribe. To post to both Pruitt-L and Pruitt-D, messages should be sent to [email protected] Messages sent there will appear both places. The downside of owning a mailing list are the bounce messages. People will sign on with broken addresses, or they'll change ISPs and not unsubscribe first, or their mailboxes will fill up, etc. Oone of the "smart" things about SmartList is that after four bounces, it automatically removes the subscriber from the mailing list. Welcome to the PRUITT mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to Pruitt [email protected] that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to [email protected] to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to [email protected] It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both.
