In light of the new location and activity on the Pruitt list, I wanted to share my line of Pruitt's. My g-g-grandfather, James Pruitt was born in Ohio, moved to Indiana where he married, and later moved to Iowa where my g-grandparents, William Kenworthy PRUITT and Annie Matilda (HARRIS) PRUITT, lived. William and Annie PRUITT moved on to Kansas where their children were born and raised. They returned to Iowa, and my grandparents, Edward PRUITT and Elizabeth (Bessie) JOHNSTON met and married. Edward and Elizabeth moved on to Idaho where they raised their children. My father, Arthur J. PRUITT was their youngest., married Mary Ella BEESON and raised us in Oregon. I am glad to see the Pruitt list so active again. I am still looking for information/evidence of Elisha Pruett(Pruitt) in Ohio. I have record of Elisha in Greene Co., Ohio (SugarCreek TWP) in the early 1800's. Believe he arrived about 1804. A Greene Co. History lists him as deceased in 1811, although I have a copy of his will that indicates that he died approximately April 1819. Elisha Pruett was married to Esther (Hester) Parnell in September 22, 1808 in neighboring Warren Co., Ohio. In other documentation found, I have found a George Parnell in the same area, which I believe to be Esther's brother. If my suspicions are correct, the Parnell's are part of the Quaker group that came from Cane Creek, SC (Union Co.) to Caesar's Creek, (Warren Co.) Ohio in the early 1800's. Could Elisha Pruett also be from the SC area? Elisha and Hester Pruett had 4 or 5 children. Elisha's will says ".... one hundred dollars which I will to my four children herein named that is to say, to my son David Twenty five dollars, and to my daughter Sarah Twenty five dollars and to my daughter Elizabeth twenty-five dollars, and to my son James twnety-five dollars to be paid to each of them as the shall come of age;" A separate family record (unconfirmed) lists the children as: Sarah b. 1812, David b. 1814, Elizabeth (Betsy) b. 1815, James b 1818, & Elisha b. 1821. My 2g-grandfather was their son James, who moved to Indiana and was strongly involved in the Quaker church there. All generations of my Pruitt family since have been Quakers. He married Dolly Williams (b. 1790 Pittsylvania Co., VA, was listed in the 1850 census Washington Co., TN; d. bef 1860 Abintgon jWashington Co., VA and buried there. Hi, everybody! First, let me say that it's terrific seeing the postings increase. Second, let me try to clear up some confusion for a few of the list members: IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU ARE SUBSCRIBED TO THE "PRUITT" SURNAME MAILING LIST. Read the headers of your email, and you will see that it says "From: [email protected]" or it will say "From: (name of person sending), FORWARDED BY [email protected]" Okay ... now.... my Pruitts are actually my husband's family. We have very little information so far and haven't begun researching the Pruitt line yet. But here's what we have been told: Columbus Pruitt was from eastern Tennessee. They say he was dark-haired and dark-eyed, very much like his mother (half Cherokee, half Irish)...and very UNlike his 7 red-headed, blue-eyed siblings who took their looks from their very Irish father. Columbus married Maggie Richards. They say that Maggie was half Cherokee herself. They married in eastern Tennessee, probably between 1904 and 1909. At least, we *think* they married in Tennessee. Sometime by 1911, they moved - evidently along with some of his brothers or cousins - to Poinsett County, Arkansas. We do know that Columbus and Maggie had a daughter about 1909. She died early in 1911, while Maggie was pregnant. In May, 1911, Maggie gave birth to twin daughters. One twin died within 2 weeks. Maggie died about a month later, leaving Columbus to care for his baby daughter, Jewell. Columbus remarried, but he died in 1917 or 1918. His wife eventually remarried, and raised Jewell along with her children from her new marriage. We don't know the stepmother's maiden or married name, or the names of any of Jewell's stepsiblings. Jewell married Ray Cooper and their oldest daughter, Anna Sue, is my husband's mother. Ray died about 12 years ago. Jewell is still living in Poinsett County, Arkansas. If anyone runs across any Pruitts in eastern Tennessee who might fit into our Columbus' family, I'd love to hear more!
