I suspect that Cherokee Intruders refers to all who came into NE Georgia as that was Cherokee land. I don't know about the Limestone Settlement, but I feel certain that Samuel Pruitt, Jr. settled on the Grove River. From my notes taken on my 1980 trip to Georgia, I copied from the 1802 Franklin Co., Tax Digest #848 Samuel Prewet 100A on Grove River. Eventually he had a large plantation there. It is reported that he gave each of his children 500 acres upon the date of their marriage. PaulineJS@aol.com wrote: > Roger, > Sorry for the confusion. It is addressed to you, Roger Pruitt. Should I use > your personal e-mail address? > Pauline Either way to respond is fine. I didn't know whether you were referring to me or someone else. You asked about sending all the information on my Joseph Pruitt. My Joseph Pruitt who was also called "Japheth Pruitt" was born in Pittsylvania Co., VA, in 1769. He first married Mary Elliott in Pittsylvania Co. on March 24, 1790. I believe Mary died sometime around or shortly after 1790, and he married Nancy ?? around 1796. There were four children born to that marriage: Phillip Pruitt, Martha "Patsy" Pruitt, Tillman Dixon Pruitt, and Zachariah Pruitt. Phillip was born ca. 1797, hence the guess of the marriage date to Nancy. Joseph moved to Franklin Co., GA, near where brothers Phillip, Samuel and Benjamin lived. On 28 Jan. 1804, Joseph bought 158 A in Franklin Co. on the south side of the Hudson River. (Samuel had land just to the south on the Grove River.) Joseph died on 12 Feb. 1805. His estate was inventoried and recorded on 29 Mar. 1805. On 16 Oct. 1805, Nancy Toney, formerly widow of Jeptha (another spelling of his name), now wife of Charles Toney petitions for dower in Franklin Co., GA. Samuel was appointed guardian of Phillip, Patsy, Tilman and Zachariah on 4 May 1807. The children are living with Charles Toney and their mother Nancy, but Samuel, their uncle, is appointed guardian. Interesting and quite unlike what would happen today. Patsy married Bedford Roland in Franklin Co. in 1816. On 28 Nov. 1816 Bedford applies on behalf of his wife Patsy Prewitt "one of the Legatees of the said dec'd (Japheth Prewitt)...her legacy of the Principal of the principal estate of the deceased." The couple subsequently move to Kentucky. Martha's death was on 23 July 1853 and on her death record it states that her parents were Japheth and Ann Pruitt. (This still has me puzzled as her mother was surely Nancy, but could it have been Nancy Ann. Death records, however, are notoriously inaccurate as I have a number that have verifiable errors on them. So her mother could have been called Ann, had a middle name of Ann, or the person giving the information just was in error.) It is obvious that my Joseph never was in Oglethorpe County in 1850 nor moved on into Alabama between 1855 and 1860. However, Samuel Pruitt, Jr. did have a son Joseph who left Franklin Co. before 1840 and moved to Pontotoc Co., MS. Good luck on your Joseph Pruitt. Roger Pruitt
Roger, Sorry for the confusion. It is addressed to you, Roger Pruitt. Should I use your personal e-mail address? Pauline

However, Samuel Pruitt, Jr. is in various court records in Franklin Co., GA, from the earliest times until his death. One set of continuing records starts in 1805 when he was ordered to have letters of administration on the estate of Joseph Prewett, deceased. Joseph was his younger brother. This continues in 1807 when he (surname spelled Prewett) was appointed as guardian of Phillip Prewett, Patsy (actual name Martha) Prewett, Tilman Prewett and Zachariah Prewett, orphans of Joseph (Japheth) Prewett. Samuel married Keziah Stokes Connally 15 Nov. 1814 in Franklin Co. She was the widow of Charles Connally. During the 1826 Sep. term of the Franklin Co. Court of Ordinary, Samuel was granted dismissal in respect to his guardianship of Levina Neal formerly Levina Conally orphan of C. Conally, dec. (Note that children in those days were considered orphaned even if the mother was still living. The mother of Phillip, Patsy, Tilman and Zachariah married Charles Toney shortly after the death of Joseph. Even though the children lived in the Toney household, Samuel Prewett was still their appointed their guardian.) Roger Pruitt

Surely, someone with a historical bent in Homer could answer the question about the Limestone Settlement. Perhaps Mr. Willis Harden or Mr. Ray Pruitt who lives nearby could answer that question, Deb. Roger Pruitt
Deb, I have in my notes on Sir name Prewit-Pruet of varied spellings, in the War of 1812. Two are listed in Ga. 1.Samuel Prewit; 4th Regt. Jones Ga. Mil. 2.Solomon Prewet; 3ed Regt. Huckaby's Regt. Wimberley's Ga. Mil. (Two others Soloman's are listed in Il. and S.C.) Only Samuel found listed in Ga.Hence, Is your's of the right age in 1812 for this service? A possible. I have notes and names, no known connection to my Jacob Pruet b c1760 Va. d. 1830 Alabama. who md. 12 Mar. 1786 Nancy Agnes Ritchey. He the son of William b c 1725 Fincastle, Va. and wife Mary Martin.. The first census 1790, there were approx. 323 Prewitt's living in America. William Privet and his son, John Privet, were among the early settlers of North Carolina (Bristol to America, p.93), and were the ancestors of a long line of Privit's in North Carolina.(note spelling) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kroll" <notredame@alltel.net> To: <PRUITT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 03, 2000 8:31 AM Subject: Re: [PRUITT-L] Samuel Pruitt, Jr./Limestone Settlement > Marci, > Thanks again.
