The FHC is a great resource. I believe all of the Azores films are on permanent loan and there is a growing collection of films from Madeira on permanent loan as well. While not (yet) fluent, I can read and speak a decent amount of Portuguese. There are many times I just cannot read the handwriting on some of these documents. But George can, every time. Some siblings used Lopes as their surname, with spelling variations of either Lopes or Lopez, while others used Sardinha. I have not researched their family, but do know that their father was a Sardinha Lopes from Madeira, and their mother, who was a Bettencourt was from the Graciosa Azores. Don, if you scan/post the vital records that you can not read, it's possible that Madeira Group members could/would help to translate.
