    3. Hello Miguel! It is a pleasure to chat with you! Well while searching for relatives of the Braz family in the Arquivo Regional da Madeira database I didn't find family but in the same database in baptismal records I found 3 of the Brazao family name! I believe that my great great grandfathers name was Manuel de Freitas Braz(ao)! The 3 I found were as listed below! Son:             Maria                                                Joaquina                                            Carolina Father:         Manuel de Freitas Brazao                  Manuel de Freitas Brazao                  Vicente Teixeira Brazao Mother:        Maria de Freitas                                Maria de Freitas                                Maria Joaquina de Freitas Parish:          Faial                                                  Faial                                                 Faial   Date:            09-08-1862                                      29-03-1860                                     08-04-1860 Book:           5854-A                                             5852-A                                           5852-A Leaf:             28                                                     4-4v.0                                             4 v.o Comments:    Setima do nome.                               Segunda do nome.                           none Now I know that the last one isn't Manuel but it could be a brother and his wife! So thats what makes me think in that direction! As well as some Freitas Brás (in the 19 th century). It could be possibleh the spelling of Brasão - which to sound laproximately) in Portuguese would have to be written Brazaungh - was shortened to Brás or Braz. In that time, in Poruguese both brasão and Brás were written with "z", so:. Brazão and Braz. What kind of indications that he was Brasão do you have? It's crucial to be sure of his name, because you can be part of the Brás or the Brasão. Other point to investigate is where was João de Freitas Brás (or Brasão) from? Knowing his bith place can help a lot, because the Freitas Brás are from one freguesia (kind pf district) the Freitas Brasão  from another, The change of the name from Braz to Freitas is not strange. Do not expect a lot of logic in Portuguese names along one given family. In America (and cultural areas influenced by it) normally you just have name and surname. It's a good idea to exercise your head in thinking how they thought in that time ; -) Not quite like today. Genealogy lingks with philology, sociology, general psychological and history of course. It's a fun ride, anyway. Best of luck, Cheers, Miguel de Castro Henriques. 3. William,  the message was a bit disjointed (at least in my computer). Note my previous note to Miguel. Faial is just next to S Jorge, so the location is very probable. have you checked the passport list?
