Hi! I am trying to find relatives in the de Freitas Braz clan! My great grand father was John Freitas Braz 1866 Madeira, Portugal who immigrated to Hawaii as a child! He died in 1937 in Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii! John Freitas Braz married Maria Cordoza de Jesus about 1887-1888 when she was 18! Maria was born May 20, 1869 in Madeira, Portugal and died Jan. 29, 1948! Maria's father was Francisco Gonzales Cordoza de Jesus, a whaler from Madeira, Portugal. My grandmother was Antonia Freitas Kung born Jan. 3, 1901 in Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii died June 21, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii! My grandmother was buried at Diamond Head Memorial Park! Any connection you can find would be greatly appreciated! Thank You! William Monk

William, When it comes to Hawaii, one of the experts on this list is Thomas de Freitas. I am assuming that he will join the discussion soon or later. For the moment just some info for your consideration: -Braz may be also spelled as Brás although I think Bráz may be more current -John was baptised as João -Cordoza should be Cardoso or in this case Cardosa. So her father would have been Francisco Gonçalves Cardoso/a de Jesus. Are you sure he also carried Jesus? -you don't have a parish for your ancestors. It is possible the Braz family acquired a passport. It perhaps should be listed . An archive search may give you something. See www.arquivo-madeira.org -Maria's father, if he was a whaler he should be from Caniçal in the Machico district. This was certainly the whaling centre in the early 20th century, but there might be other possibilities. When i have an opportunity I will also look in the archives. If I get something I will let you know.
