There is also de Fajã da Ovelha which is on the Southwest side of the island. We are actually planning a family trip to Madeira this August after an absence of some 25 years and wanted to locate my mother's place of birth, she insists it is called Feijao da Velha and may have once been a paroquia in Sao Vicente, she was orphaned at the age of 10 after her mother's death in 1942, father unable to take care of her and her 3 siblings, many were scattered around relatives homes, she ended up in an orphanage somewhere on the island, in her teens she settled in Camara de Lobos and married my father a Nunes da Silva from S. Martinho. My maternal grandmother was named Maria Graca de Jesus and was born around 1906 in Brazil; apparently her mother had immigrated to Brazil from Sao Vicente around the turn of the century and returned with my grandmother after her husband became adulterous. It's all pretty sketchy but I was hoping to visit the parish in Sao Vicente and get a copy of her baptismal record and possibility any information on her mother or grandparents. Jose Fernandes is probably correct Feijao da Velha may be a nickname or "alcunha". It is a small port area, about 2km from the village.I checked Elucidário Madeirense V.III) and it doesn't list Feijão Velho as a sitio in S. Vicente. However, they only list about a dozen places. Among them Fajã dos Vinháticos. This is closer to wine than beans! I came across 2 interesting place names: Fajã dos Judeus(indicating Jewish presence in this area) and Saramago , which surely is not named after the only Portuguese Nobel of literature. Just an interesting coincidence, although his daughter lives in Madeira. There is also an interesting creek "ribeira" named Hell (Inferno). If you have been to S.Vicente it fits. I am not sure of the context of the name that Eusébio refers to. It seems to me that is more a "alcunha" (nickname ) than a place. My other piece of "wisdom" is to e-mail the place and ask them. There is one in São Martinho...As you say it's in the vicinity of São Vicente, which is on the opposite side, it has to be discarded- Searching for other homophonic names there is also Fajã da Ovelha, but not in São Vicente or nearby. It's in Calheta. In any case here is the meaning of Fajâ (theree are several in Madeira , as well in Açores) : O topónimo *Fajã *ou o seu plural *Fajãs *são nomes típicos dos arquipélagos dos Açores e da Madeira, cuja origem se encontra em *fajã*, «pequena extensão de terreno plano, susceptível de cultura, geralmente à beira-mar», conforme nos explica José Pedro Machado, no *Dicionário Onomástico Etimológico da Língua Portuguesa* To sum up "Fajã is a small extension of flat land, where it is possible to farm, usually by the seaside." Could you check again to see whether the spelling you send is accurate? Best, Miguel On Mon, Apr 9, 2012 at 1:05 AM, leandro deoliveira <gregobhte1@aol.com>wrote: > Hi Eusebio > > I havent.
