Hello everyone. I've been reading all the recent email activity and thought I'd put my husband's line "out there" to see if anyone might be related--or know anyone who is--or can connect the line to earlier ancestors. The surname is Gomes Jardim. The earliest I've been able to get is in the mid-late 1600's in Santo Antonio parish, Funchal. Of course, the earliest generations are pretty sketchy. My husband and I visited Madeira in 2002 and had a wonderful time--of course I spent most of the trip at the archives. The birth dates listed below I got from the baptism records. He married Emilia Carolina Gomes Jardim February 18, 1833 in Santo Antonio, Funchal, Madeira, daughter of Joao Gomes Camacho and Francisca Gomes Jardim. Emilia was born March 27, 1812 in Santo Antonio, Funchal, Madeira. She was baptized: April 02, 1812, Santo Antonio, Funchal, Madeira. The death records of the church in Santo Antonio, Funchal, list Joao as both Joao Gomes Peneireico and Joao Gomes Jardim Pereira. The record states he died Feb. 2, 1873, aged 60, and was the son of Francisco Gomes Jardim and Antonia Gomes. His granddaughter Augusta Gomes Jardin (b. 1886) wrote some notes about the family on the back of an envelope and listed his name and that of his wife as: "Joao G Jardin Emilia Peneireiro". I don't quite understand this. Anyone have any ideas? Hi Karen!! The S.Roque/StºAntónio/S.Martinho Gomes Jardins are my father's line, though since 200 years ago we changed the name to Gomes Perneta. I've been to your website some time ago, and I already inteeded to connect "those unknown Hawaiian cousins" to my genealogy, which hopefully I'll be doing now. I've at least 3 (different?) lines of Gomes Jardim, and the farest generation I went on them, until now, is Manuel Gomes Jardim b. about 1590/1600, married to Ana Fernandes about 1620 (in Stº António?). My father's Gomes Jardim lineage ends with António Afonso, who married Maria Gomes Jardim about 1670 (God knows where), thus it is Gomes Jardim by female. You mention a Sebastião Gomes Jardim there, who was married to Francisca Gomes Jardim. This Gomes Jardim from Francisca is a yet a different line, which apparently has come at a later time directly from Ponta do Pargo to Stº António, where they married the local Gomes Jardim family (which were not close relatives, according to their marriage record). Maybe next week I'll have more on theat family. :) BTW, I believe we are closely related by way of the wives of these Gomes Jardins. Can you post more about their ancestry? I recall seeing a Caires there, which is very familiar to me. I also recall seeing "Sant'Ana" mentioned somewhere in your website. This little place of S. I would like to add a small note here. Maria Gomes Jardim has to be born before 1722, as her mother Francisca Gomes Jardim had a second marriage at that date with Manuel Martins, being a widow.
