Dear D. Rodrigues, Here is the information about that place I could find in Dicionário Corográfico do Arquipélago da Madeira by Fernando Augusto da Silva, 1934 edition: "Pinheiro: Sitio povoado da freg. do Arco da Calheta. 37f e 176h." It means that, by 1934 (or a little earlier), there were there 37 houses with 176 inhabitants. I don't know where it is, as I don't know Arco da Calheta very well, though I can ask some of my co-workers who are from there. I presume the origin of the name was some notorious pinetree that worked as a mark for that place, as happened in many other places with the same name, here in Madeira.
