Just curious if anyone has heard of this person. Supposedly married to Dona Isabel de Vasconcellos abt 1600 or so. He is listed as a parent on the wedding of his daughter Dona Isabel de Velosa to Henrique de Bettencourt Correa. Problem is I have found in the "Texeiras of Tristao Vaz" genealogy...they show this Dona Isabel that married Henrique is the daughter of Francisco de Velosa de Vasconcellos & Dona Isabel de Vasconcellos..whom I also have in my database. Are Francisco and Goncalo the same person...or is my record wrong...or is the genealogy wrong...? Just thought it might be worth throwing out there!!! Hope everyone is doing well...sure has been quiet out there! Cece
Cece, I would bet it is the same person, and the name was mispelled, as often occured due to lack of attention from the priests. I'm intrigued by the "Correia" on his name. It probably comes from his maternal great-grandmother Guiomar Correia de Sousa, of unknown ancestry, wife of the French born Rui Vaz Onzel/Uzel, the source of the Uzel surname in Madeira, which was also adopted later on by the Barons of Uzel for their title. Are you sure this Henrique used "Bettencourt Correia"? That combination was found most often on the Torre Belas (Correia family), I wonder if he was using it to look like one of them? Well I am looking at the record as I speak! Column says Henrique da Bettencourt Correia (clear abbreviations-my spelling!) to Dona Isabel V Inside the actual record it says Henrique de Bitancurt Correya filho of Antonio Jacque & Dona Illena de Bitancurt, ja defuncto, moradores of Canico...to Dona Isabel de Veloza filha of Cap Gonsalo de Velosa de Vasconcellos & Dona Isabel de Vasconcellos. I do have a brother for Henrigue who went by the name Manuel Soares de Betencourt who married Dona Maria de Velosa... daughter of Francisco de Velosa de Vasconceelos and Dona Isabel de Vasconcellos (and Isabel above's sister...assuming Goncalo is in error and her fathers name is actually Francisco). I do not have any thing before Antonio Jacque & Dona Illena de Betttencourt however, so don't know about the maternal great grandmother connection you mention below. Hi Cece, It is interesting indeed taht he adopted the "Bettencourt Correia" surname. The Correia here may have 2 origins, described below: 1. Antº Jacques Phenix 2. Helena de Bettencourt 3. Rafael Jacques Phenix, b. England 4. Jerónima Soares de Sousa 5. Henrique de Bettencourt 6. Ana Cabral 7. 8. 9. Estêvão Soares de Sousa (grandson of Jº Soares de Albergaria, 2nd Captain Donatario of Stª Mª Island, and Branca de Sousa Falcão) 10. 11. Jº Bettencourt de Freitas "o Fio Seco" 12. Helena de Vasconcelos 13. António CORREIA de Sousa 14. Maria Cabral da Camara .... 23. Pº de Bettencourt 24. Mª de Freitas 25. Antº Mendes de Vasconcelos 26. Filipa de Morais 27. Rui Vaz Uzel/Unzel/Onzel, rich French man who established in Atabua 28. Guiomar CORREIA de Sousa 29. Francisco Cabral (not linked yet) 30. Branca da Câmara (not linked yet) .... 47. Jº de Bettencourt "o Velho" (son of Henry de Bettencourt "the French") 48. Bárbara Gomes Ferreira (daughter of João Gomes "o Trovador" and Guiomar Ferreira, daughter of Gonçalo Aires Ferreira) 49. João de Freitas CORREIA 50. Guiomar de Lordelo (daughter of Henrique de Lordelo and Guiomar Drummond, daughter of John Drummond, son of Sir John Drummond of Stobhall, brother of Anabela, queen of Scotland) However this last João de Freitas Correia seems to be son of Gonçalo de Freitas, F.C.R., and Maria de Valdez "Correão" (which is not the same as Correia/Correa), thus I have my doubts about this Correia origin. Even more, nor Correão nor Correia seem to have been common among the descendants of this couple, and I have some vague suspects that Maria de Valdez could have been of Jewish origin, therefore the name would be something to hide. Thus I would bet that it comes from the wife of Rui Uzel, the misterious French man who was one of the first to inhabit Atabua, probably seeking refuge for some crime commited on his homeland.
