Several years ago, my daughter said we should go to Madeira. So we set a date of 2005. We kept our promise to ourselves--having since been married and having since bought a house did not deter my daughter. Four of us went in April. We had a great time and saw many wonders of nature. We went to Arco da Calheta, where my great grandfather was from. In Funchal we found the Road of the New Bridge. My great grandmother's family lived on this street. We had no luck finding any relative, but I did not have enough information to ready do that. We were able to meet with Paulo, the member of this list who is from Madeira. We had a long enjoyable conversation. We took lots of pictures. We would have taken more but both digital cameras we had quick working, so old fashion film was used a lot. Driving the winding roads on the hills is an adventure in itself. The people were open and friendly. We visited the Archive but they were in the process of moving and we could not get some marriage records we had hoped to get while there. On our way to Madeira, we stayed a few days in Lisbon. Lisbon is also well worth the visit. David Tennessee, USA
