    3. It only indicates the date, the book and the page where you might find the information. You still have to go to the films. -----Original Message----- From: prt-madeira-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:prt-madeira-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Donald Rodrigues Sent: September 22, 2006 1:08 AM To: prt-madeira@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PT-MADEIRA] Families of Madeira A question for those of you who have seen the Madeira marriage index books referenced below. What information is displayed for each couple in the index? Are the names of the witnesses displayed? The names of the groom's parents and the names of the brides parents? Thank you. D. 3. One more thing regarding the marriage index registry books-there is information that I have found in my copies that has been valuable in defining my research. For example, the asteriks * that appear next to some of the names are explained at the beginning of each section. These explanations are not available online. Sometimes this data in very valuable- marriages that were performed elsewhere and recorded at the bride's family church, notations regarding previous marriages and subsequent widow status, name in margin of page being different than name in actual record--- any of this data can help narrow or change the focus of the search. THere are also conversions from the old names to the names used in the online database- Ilene=Helena, Roche=Rocha, Phelipa=Filipa, etc.. I bought my books a few years ago while in Madeira before the archive was online. Recently my brother asked me if the books had helped me at all. I had to say not all of them, but the book from Machico has been a tremendous asset. I guess some of it depends on the dispersement of your family on the island. If they were very widespread- probably not going to get much help from any one book. If they were fairly concentrated in one or two churches, it can be a big help. The books are all in Portuguese, but not difficult to use- it has been a learn as I go thing for me. I look at it as part of the discovery. Mary da Silva Frost
