IMO, Family Tree Maker is for the average non-data person. I use PAF and give my parents a data file which they can load into FTM to view. FTM is a bit easier for them to understand the data. They have since learned how the whole data thing works and have started looking at the data using PAF. I do have a problem with FTM selling my data too. It adds unwanted data to your information, estimating dates and so forth. 2. They have taken all kinds of liberties with the GEDCOM standards making it incompatible with other programs. 3. Worst of all, they encourage users to submit their data which they then copyright, put on CD's and sell it back without checking for accuracy, credibility or duplication, a most detestable practice in my opinion. I have used PAF for some 15 years, back to when it was still a DOS based program and find it more than adequate. Best of all it is free.
