Canhas is a parish in Ponta do Sol. It is just north of the village. I suspect you can get some detailed info from their website at www.cm-pontadosol.com Sitio is a neighbourhood. Levada is a small water channel. The south of Madeira would not be able to have sustainable agriculture if it weren't for the levadas which bring water from the north. That was one of our people's greatest achievements (among others). Cova could refer to a small valley or something surrounded. In Madeira it also means a cemetery plot or a hole in the ground. Today, these places can still be identified, normally by older people. In the old days, outside of Funchal, there were a few street names. In village centers such as in Machico, Santa Cruz or Porto Santo there were some street names. Obviously today that has changed. Good luck on a detailed map! Where may I obtain a map showing these designations? Thank you. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PRT-MADEIRA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
