I had read that the grave sites are reused after about 15 years. It may depend upon the need. When I visited the cemetery in Arco da Calheta during our trip to Madeira, I saw some graves close to 30 years old. I have asked this same question from family who live on the island but haven't been given a definitive answer. I'll follow up again and see if I can get an answer. I was told in the Azores that after 7 years the remains are replaced by another body. It was unclear what happened with the older remains. You can purchase a plot and it remains untouched. I also saw that in the small buildings that were family resting places, there were small very polished small casks that held the remains of members who had been replaced in the ground by later arrivals. Also f a chemical is spread on the remains of a new arrival in the buildings to decompose the body. The caskets are in plain view and very well kept.
