Hello everyone: I am currently researching my ancestors in Gaula and have hit a couple of stumbling blocks. I cannot read a few documents that I have seen on microfilm and, so far, have been unsuccessful at obtaining a copy of the "Familias de Gaula". Can someone tell me the parentage of Estevao Pires and Catarina da Mata married 1653 in Gaula? His father appears to be Joao (something) with the mother unclear. Her father appears to be Domingos Goncalves with the mother unclear. Also- the parentage of Cristavao Pires and Isabel Rodrigues married 1588 in Gaula? His parents are unclear, possibly from Santa Cruz, and her parents appear to be Joao Rodrigues and Beatriz Goncalves. I now understand the complaint about early handwriting that looked like a language other than Portuguese! Some of the films from the 1560s are virtually indecipherable! Mary, I am not sure this is of much help, but I have found that in certain cases the microfilm is not as clear as getting a copy from the Madeira Archives. In addition you can scan it and there is software that cleans it up. Philip R. who is a member of this list can probably give you the name of the software. Have a nice day.
