Hi Paula- My dad's first cousin, Rosa Beatriz de Lima, married Henrique Pestana March 1, 1924 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Henrique (Henry) was born February 13, 1893 in Camara dos Lobos, Madeira. Several years ago I located Henrique and Rosa's two daughters who live in Massachusetts, and I have corresponded with them regularly ever since. From them I learned that Henrique's mother was Leopoldina R. d'Abreu. She was a hotel maid; his biological father was an unknown Englishman who was one of the hotel guests. Leopoldina married Manoel Pestana to give Henrique a last name. Henrique had an unknown number of half-brothers and half-sisters and was treated badly because he was blond, blue-eyed, and light-skinned (most likely inherited from his biological father) in a family of much darker people. After his mother died, he made his way to the U.S.A. Departing Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal on August 14, 1920 he sailed on the S.S. Roma. Henrique did not keep in touch with his family after immigrating to the U.S.A. The daughters learned this information from listening to their parents' hushed conversations when the girls were thought to have been out of earshot. Does this correlate with facts you have? Please let me know if you can add further information. Greg Lima Washington State ---- Paula Fernandes <paulamffernandes@gmail.com> wrote: ============= Wow!!!! I was not sure that I would hear anything. Thank you for such a quick reply and to provide me with more details that you found on the Arco films. How does one access these? Where are you located? Did Vencislau marry in Madeira? I assume he did as he was travelling with wife Gregoria and two kids, Manuel 12 anos and Maria 3 anos. in 1872 and he was age 45. Assuming these were the only children they had as I do not have any further details. He got married late for a Portuguese man. So I would assume circa marriage to be 1859 1860 based o Manuel being 12 and assuming he was the first born?. Is there anything further that you can check for me or advise me where I may do so???? Maria 3 years travelling with them is my g grandmother and we know that she arrived in Demerara at a very young age. The names Vencislau and Gregoria are in my records and were confirmed by elders. These names are not the very common Manuels and Antonios. So I can only hope I am on the right path to bridging my Maderia South America connections. Any further help, suggestions are appreciated. This is the first real anything in Maderia......I have to follow through with this and would welcome any additional help. I am also researching Pestana of Camara da Lobos with no real luck hear.
