Hello Miguel: I am glad that you have been able to use what I had. It is good for all of us on the list to be able to help each other. You are welcome, Mary -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Miguel de Castro Henriques Sent: Wednesday, January 13, 2010 8:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PT-MADEIRA] Gaula for Miguel Hello Mary, Thanks to your data I was able to trace the ascendants of Maria da Mata m. Pedro Gonçalves (slave), parents of Simoa da Mata m. André Martins It's a spectacular case of social mobility, indeed, especially for Pedro Gonçalves the slave, because Maria da Mata is the 4th g.daughter of João Rodrigues Teixeira "O Gordo", FCR (nobleman of the Royal House), the 3d g.daughter of Afonso da Mata, Escudeiro (minor nobility), and 2d g. daugther of Álvaro Gonçalves and Isabel Arrais de Mendonça. (Isabel Arrais from the nobility). André Martins as I suspected, is a Martins da Mata, son, and g.son of two other André Martins, and also descendant of Álvaro Gonçalves and Isabel Arrais de Mendonça. and also of the old and well known Afonso da Mata - The names of the testemunhas some morgados, in all these marriages and some Ornelas, Teles de Meneses (la créme de la crème of Gaula) etc. pointed to something. Now i can see why they fit in the whole picture. As to the second marriage of Simoa, it's not surprising. She was perhaps a beautiful mulatto woman with a good pedigree. Anyway Pedro Gonçalves to have married Maria da Mata (dau. of João Martins and ( m. 1576) Juliana Rodrigues had to be escravo forro. Because after all, she was the 4th g.daugther of "The Gordo", This is quite telling about madeiran society. It talks of a mobile society in that time, if not anywhere, at least in Gaula..
