Hi Cece - My Great-Great-Grandfather, Ignácio, was born in 1810 in Canhas, Madeira to unwed mother Ana Maria, daughter of José da Silva Carpinteiro and Josefa Maria. A year later, Ana married Francisco da Silva Pitta who adopted Ignácio. Ignácio's children would later use the surname Pita, Pitta of Pitta de Ignácio (now spelled Pita de Inácio). I have 12 marker exact matches to the English names Marriott, Caldabaugh, Woodward and Wright. But at the 25 marker level, they drop out as matches. At the 25 marker level your husband comes up as a genetic distance of 2 and at the 37 marker level he appears as a genetic distance of 4. So it appears that about 30 generations ago, or about 840 years (based on 30 years per generation), your husband and I have a common ancestor! We'll have to work on finding out who he was!! I recognized your e-mail address and name from the prt-Madeira list. You are the first Portuguese Madeiran surname to have hit that high for him. His other 3 - 25 marker matches have English sounding surnames (Collins, Beller, Blayney). Unfortunately Ed's direct paternal line (which is also my paternal line) ends after just 3 generations as our great grandfather was an orphan... Is your tree online anywhere?
