With the Vascocelos you may link to the great warrior and Portuguese hero, Egas Moniz, for instance. Your Freitas perhaps are linked to the first Freitas da Silva, from Santa Cruz . As regards Silvas, as Paulo pointed out, the Silvas in Madeira when they appear early, are probably nobility, from the very old Portuguese nobility. It's a shame that Americans are do lazy and negligent with the spelling of føreing. Frates is a bit of a mosnter derivative. The only redereming part is that Frates, in Latin, means "brother". Otherwise i think the Americanization of names, to sound easy and palatable, is quite pathetic and anhistorical. It destroys the charge of memory and history contained in any given name.
