Dear Regina, Please do not stop trying to communicate in English. My father who came from Madeira to the USA when he was 21 years old and to the day he died at age 73, would carry on a conversation using words in Portuguese and mixed in with English. He never "mastered," the English spoken language but would read the English daily newspaper from cover to cover and then be able to tell you in Portuguese what he had just read in English. Portuguese was spoken in our home through out my life, but I never "mastered," conversational Portuguese, "kinda," like my father, except it was fewer words in Portuguese and move in English... After both of my parents were gone, and when I started to research my Madeira roots, I became rather proficient in reading the old Portuguese documents, by using a English-Portuguese dictionary, but I still to this day can not carry on a conversation in Portuguese. ;-)). You have joined a wonderful group of people that will help whether you post messages in Portuguese or English, we are all here to help you as I'm sure you will be able to help us... I do not use a translator, but I'm sure that some of our list members can suggest one that they have used... Happy to read that Denise and you have found a common ancestor linking your families.
