    3. In searching ARM Martinho is there, I didn't see Martino...but not all of Estreito da Calheta vitals have been indexed. Thank you for your input...;-) Pat p.s. Hoping that Zelia Mullins adds to this thread...she's in SA and I'm sure can be very helpful in pointing out the various sources... 3. In Portugal it would be Martinho not Martino (maybe in Spain or Italy?). The h was probably dropped since the "nh" sound is hard to pronounce for non portuguese speakers.   Luis Beal "Not to know what happened before we were born is to remain perpetually a child. For what is the worth of a human life unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors." 3. Thanks Luis! Yes, my dad and his brothers took the decision to drop the "h" after several misspellings from government departments within South Africa resulted in them not being related anymore, as some of their ID documents had the 'h' in and other had it left out. The last Martinho was my grand father Antonio, born in Etsreito da Calheta between 1901 and 1906. 3. a. Both Martinho and Martim are names. They come from the Latin - Martinus. ( which originates from Mars, the God of War). Martinho has been used also as a surname. The surname - patronymic - of Martim is Martins. However, apart from that the Martinhos and the Martins have nothing in common. b. The Catanho from Greg's female line, originally is Cattaneo. Comes from Italy. Indeed, the first two brothers Cattaneo, Chirio and Rafae,l.who were from Italian old nobility (actually one of the 28 noble families of Genova, Italy), came to Madeira in the beggining of the 16th century. Most certainly at one point Greg's mother links either to Chirio or Rafael.
