http://www.portaldocidadao.pt/PORTAL/pt it is possible that you can order current certificates from this Portuguese Government site. Cheri Mello (from the Azorean list, but also ours) suggested it. I went there and it is possible, but you will need to be able to write in Portuguese and have to register. I also don't know if Portuguese sites include Madeira and Azores. There are many services which are regional, i.e. health. Also, it says in the sites than any certificates older than 100 years are not available. So I still like to go directly to Madeira. José
