As I and some more people here are descended from the Vaz Rebelos, a well known family from the beginning of the 17 th century (Madeira) which settled mostly in S. António (Madeira) it's possible that your Rebelos come from them. Best, Miguel de Castro Henriques On Sat, Dec 17, 2011 at 7:33 PM, Teresa Baclaan <baclaant@gmail.com> wrote: > Hello. Teresa, Synthetising what is below 1) you have the several spellings of the name Rebelo: Rhabelo, Rhabello, Rabêlo, Rebêlo, Rebelo, Rebello, Revel, Ravel, Rabelais, 2) Besides the possible Portuguese origin of that name: from the Rio Douro area, (North of Portugal) . From there in the 15 th century some Rebelos (or at least one) settled in Madeira. Before that they may have come from Italy or France. and 3) the meaning of the name the name means someone who lives near a river. Or can also be a boat, like the rabelo from rio Douro. Or some part of a plow. Possible Germanic origin.
