José, It's just the title. I posted it because it's one of the few genealogical works about Madeiran families to be found in the BN (Biblioteca Nacional), Lisbon. It's about the Pestanas, and as a rule in any genealogical work thoroughly done about any given family we're almost certain to find some connection with ours and some interesting data. Of course "family" for a genealogist has a very different sense and scope than for ordinary (non genealogist) people. It's very inclusive, !5 th degree cousins exist, the roots are medieval and pre-medieval. You are thrilled when discover a grand uncle from the 13 th century, etc. recently in one of my genelolgical lists Manuel Abranches de Soveral, a distinguished genealogist from a distinguished and very old Portuguese family, told that he had a grand-uncle, brother of his grandmother, who was a genealogist. So he was all the time discovering close and distant cousins, connections and links with other families,etc.. However, his sister was very reluctant to extend the scope of her family, which for her was far more nuclear, reduced to some digital number of cousins, who had been cousins since ever (that is since 400 hundred years or so) and a couple of Casas (in Portugal an old and noble family is referred as those of "Casa de") . The uncle genealogist continued to add cousins who were even more cousins, I mean , more closely related, than those her sister had the assurance were the real, traditional ones. So the lady, overwhelmed by such a flood of new relatives, finally when people asked about it, had this funny remark: Oh, these are my brother's cousins , -) With most of my own family it's the same. They're almost upset when I tell them add one old Germanic King, or one more Fisher King from the Merovech lineage. or a moor slave, a carpenter from the XV th century or a well known misbehaved rascal. So for me the sarcastic remark (from a very close relative) I was recently gifted with was; Oh it seems Miguel has found a new link to Charlemagne...
