    3. Hi Melanie, What a wonderful "Journey of Discovery," that you have gathered for you and your family. When I first viewed your input, I thought about our Madeira ancestors that came to the USA by way of Trinidad in the West Indies after leaving Madeira for reasons of religious persecution. Though to date I have not linked with the various members of this group, but continue to hold a special place in my heart... Two of our list members, have wonderful websites that focus on this migration... If you have not viewed or been in contact with these two wonderful people, their websites are located at: Deb Kleber: http://homepage.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~madeira/index.htm Bob Coraor (Coraor is a spelling variation of Correa)... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~klondike98/ Also featured on Bob's website is the publication: "The Coming of the Portuguese," by George Rawlings Poage... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~klondike98/Exiles/poage.htm. Many years ago I was sent a copy of this publication after contacting the Illinois State Historical Society, Springfield, Illinois... At the time I was hoping to link my de Freitas ancestry to these brave and dedicated individuals... but no such luck...though every now and then I continue to look at this publication... Good Luck! 3. Thank you Mary... I always find it very interesting when a vital record contains the wording of "no judge with her as she is emancipated by "alvara," of judge." What exactly does this mean... is it saying that she does not reside with her parents, or that she's not a slave...? In the many documents that I personally have viewed I have never come across this wording, wonder if it's the "norm," to a given area... Your husband's family appears to be located in the Sao Goncalo; Sao Roque; Funchal; Sao Antonio; Sao Martinho area of the island. The only connection to this area in my family is the possible connection with the daSilva Se' and Goncalves Se' surname/family. Yet to link to my main branch. My family, though with a sprinkling all over the island, primarily settled in the Calheta, Estreito daCalheta, and the Arco daCalheta... I checked for Santos ancestors from Ponta do Sol, but did not see any... 3. Pat/Philip...I just checked an the baptism records for estreito da calheta are up on the arm site. I have the book here for funchal but it only lists the marriages and some 'termos' (deaths). I would be happy to post the death notices if you like for the pereiras that I find. What I am noticing is that not many are just pereira there are names follwing e.g da sousa, serrao. 3. Hi Louise, I've just been sending cash (Euros) via registered mail to circumvent the long wait and usurious bank charges. It's worked well for me and definitely expedited the process. I haven't been through the citizenship request procedure, but you may want to check in with cousin Betty. I chatted to her a couple of weeks back and this particular topic came up and she has some experience in the requirements and application procedures. Hope all are well on your side. 3. Hi- I have been stuck for ages so am not as far back as you lot are....HOWEVER; I have: Emanuel Antonio Pereira born to Antonio Pereira and his wife Maria Gomes in St. John's, Antigua, W.I. on 28 Jan. 1871 I BELIVE Emanuel had 2 sisters-but am not 100% certain-(about 98.5% certain!) They were: Caroline Pereira Born 15 July 1865 in Basseterre, St. Christopher (now St. Kitts) W.I. (God parents were: John Gumbs and Maria Gumbs (not sure if they were Husband/wife or Brother/sister) And Mary Pereira born 15 October 1867 born in St. John's, Antigua, W.I. Mary Pereira married Emanuel Teshara (Teixeira) in St. John's Antigua, W.I. on 24 September 1879- she was a minor and her guardian Maximilian Joachim made his mark (both the bride and groom signed on their own behalf). Emanuel Pereira (MY Grandfather) died in Antigua, Mary and Caroline both emigrated to New York and eventually died there (as well as Mary's daughters') . I have documentation of the 3 siblings' births, the death records of each as well as Ellis Island records for those who emigrated to the US (and Emanuel who visited his sisters). I have a number of US Census for Mary & Caroline (as well as for Mary's 2 daughters) I have been unable to find any record of Antonia Pereira and his wife Maria Gomes (ANY spelling!!) arriving in the W.I.- Leaving Madeira, marrying or etc... Anyway- there they are, Pat. Melanie . -----Original Message----- From: prt-madeira-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:prt-madeira-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pat Corbera Sent: June-22-11 11:10 PM To: prt-madeira@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PT-MADEIRA] Surname: Pereira Hi Don, I personally do not have Antonio Pereira from the Estreito daCalheta, married/or not to a Francisca de Jesus, with a daughter Rosa/Roza de Jesus bapt 12 Oct 1897... I did find an entry on ARM Bapt Records for a child Rosa, bapt 12 Oct 1897 father: incognito and mother Francisca de Jesus (no mention of Perpetua)... Is this the entry/family that you're referring to in your posting? How have you linked Francisca and Roza to your lineage? Do you have any other info, ie: as to the names of Francisca's parents. Any other Pereiras in your ancestry?
