Yes, my dad and his brothers took the decision to drop the "h" after several misspellings from government departments within South Africa resulted in them not being related anymore, as some of their ID documents had the 'h' in and other had it left out. The last Martinho was my grand father Antonio, born in Etsreito da Calheta between 1901 and 1906. I located an email from Anne Lehmkuhl to the list...She provided a listing of Borrageiro individuals in South Africa. Tomorrow I'll send her an email, requesting source information for researching in SA, along with requesting her fee structure for her services. Hi Pat, There are quite a few listings for genealogy help for South Africa, however, if it's a case of obtaining records and help navigating the system, I would definitely recommend having someone based in SA to do it. Anne has contributed various articles to numerous genealogical sites and also has her own site/blog at http://southafricanresearcher.blogspot.com/2010/04/early-portuguese-settlers-in-south.html The name Martins is listed on the site as one of the early Madeiran settlers. I'm not sure of Greg's dates, perhaps it predates his ancestors, but worth a look. Not sure if this is my paternal great grandfather, as somewhere (according to my father)in our family we have the Gomes surname as well and that would more or less tie up with the 1906 birth date, as my grandfather had two older sisters that were born before him (between 1901 and 1906). You will see there are another three Martinho's that got married between 1901 and 1907, but 1907 would suggest that my grandfather was born out of wedlock if he was born in 1906! Happy hunting. Not sure of his date of birth but my dad seems to think it was around 1901, although they have another document indicating it was in 1906. I will try and get a bit more info. I know that there is a small piece of property in Estraita Calheta, which should still be registered in the family name, although nobody has shown any interest in it for a very long time.
