    3. Hello Tom, I saw a bit of your site at the Tribal Pages.. Congratulations! Big effort and research. If you allow me a suggestion why don't you explore more this line of Bettencourts and Carvalhos Escórcios - you have a chance of linking to medieval times with both. not to mention Portuguese, French, and Scottish royalty. With the Vascocelos you may link to the great warrior and Portuguese hero, Egas Moniz, for instance. Your Freitas perhaps are linked to the first Freitas da Silva, from Santa Cruz . As regards Silvas, as Paulo pointed out, the Silvas in Madeira when they appear early, are probably nobility, from the very old Portuguese nobility. It's a shame that Americans are do lazy and negligent with the spelling of føreing. Frates is a bit of a mosnter derivative. The only redereming part is that Frates, in Latin, means "brother". Otherwise i think the Americanization of names, to sound easy and palatable, is quite pathetic and anhistorical. It destroys the charge of memory and history contained in any given name. Fortunately you have restø®ed your historical name tø its integrity and meaning Meanwhile I enjoyed your description of the work in the sugar plantations of the "Sandwich Islands". It was like a prison, indeed. Prisonners of a Sugar plantation company, all of them, living like convicts half in slavery, or like soldiers of an imperialist army.. Fortunately they managed to escape to California! ,Best wishes, Miguel On Wed, Oct 26, 2011 at 5:01 PM, Thomas Freitas <family@railsoft.com> wrote: > Actually, her name was Francisca Josefa Bettencourt and was married to > Antonio Carvalho Escorcio July 10, 1755. 1. Re: [PT-MADEIRA] de Sá Family
    2. Hi Cece - My Great-Great-Grandfather, Ignácio, was born in 1810 in Canhas, Madeira to unwed mother Ana Maria, daughter of José da Silva Carpinteiro and Josefa Maria. A year later, Ana married Francisco da Silva Pitta who adopted Ignácio.  Ignácio's children would later use the surname Pita, Pitta of Pitta de Ignácio (now spelled Pita de Inácio). I have 12 marker exact matches to the English names Marriott, Caldabaugh, Woodward and Wright.  But at the 25 marker level, they drop out as matches.  At the 25 marker level your husband comes up as a genetic distance of 2 and at the 37 marker level he appears as a genetic distance of 4. So it appears that about 30 generations ago, or about 840 years (based on 30 years per generation), your husband and I have a common ancestor! We'll have to work on finding out who he was!! 3. Actually, her name was Francisca Josefa Bettencourt and was married to Antonio Carvalho Escorcio July 10, 1755. Her parents were Antonio Espinola de Carvalho and Isabel de Vasconcelos. I found out later from their marriage document that she was born in Porto da Cruz. My line follows through her son Manuel Carvalho E Spínola Marriage Document Reads as follows; Antonio Carvalho Escorcio, widow of Antonia de Freitas, legitimate son of Joao Escorcio Carvalho natural of Santa Cruz, and his wife, Dona Izabal Moniz. Natural of the freguesa of Santa Beatriz de Agua de Pena. Paternal grandparents are Antonio Mendonca de Carvalho and his wife Dona Beatriz de Mendonca, naturals of Santa Cruz. I did not click on that option...I wanted people to be able to contact me, and then I would make the decision whether or not to allow them to view my tree. Note: although your tree will instantly become private, it usually takes about a week or more to be reflected in the search index... ALSO NOTE: If some one contacts you after your tree is a Private Tree and you accept their request to view your tree, be sure to let them only view/contribute information to you via email, and not to be able to "edit/change," any of your tree information. I phoned and spoke with one of their service reps...and was told that I should read their "disclaimer." When I pointed out that many of the suggestions do not even apply, it was like she was a "broken record," and kept repeating the same phrase of "read the disclaimer, and/or fill out the customer service email form. Well, I did, and it's now over one week still waiting for a reply to my email. I personally think that Ancestry.com is totally aware of what's going on, but for whatever reason do not wish to address the problems. Last evening I did received a reply from a person I had sent a message to, informing her that their linking and dates were incorrect...she said that she was well aware of the errors and was working on trying to correct them...but that her time spent making corrections is limited due to summer vacation and her children being out of school. I wrote back and said when she's ready that I would be more than happy to help her. Hope I do hear from her again, since she's incorrectly linked with my da Silva Se' family. I think that Ancestry.com has become so large and their main concern is not to learn of ways of improving their programs, but to continue to grow, all under the "umbrella," of what's in their "disclaimer," and it's "not their fault." Well, I guess I'm not the only one concerned with their suggestions/linking methods...and some would say if you're not happy with Ancestry.com just pull your pedigree information and cancel your subscription...
