    3. Rich, thanks for the response. I will look into Kathy doing some research for me. I am sure she will be better at it than I am. I wasn't sure of which researcher you were referring to but Kathy's name came up. I do have a Boucher line but they are not from the Taunton area to my knowledge. The first generation came from Canada and moved to New Bedford. One never knows if there is a connection until we compare the tree. Thanks for the information. 2. Miguel de Castro Henriques
    3. Hello Don, 1) Lopes is a patronymic - it comes from Lopo. Just as Rodrigues comes frøm Rodrigo, Henrique from Henriques, Gonçalves from Gonçalo, Fernandes from Fernando or Fernão and so on. If you were Scottish you woiuld be Mc Wolf, if jewish Ben Lopo,. As you're from Portuguese stock you're Lopes. the suffix "es" fulfills the role of "Mac", or "Ben" meaning "son of". 2) Your ancestor's full name is André (not Andrés) Fernandes Lopes. Here you have to consider that in that time the first name, comes from father, second from mother. So if you're looking for the agnatic line (Paternal) you should be looking for a Fernandes. The Lopes may, I stress "may" come from the female side, and some female could be called Lopes as well, because she is descended from a Lopo. So you probably, as you were correctly told, do not descend from the first Lopes who settled in the island. You may descend, however, from one of the Lopos (plural of Lopo) who settled in the island. So I would search for any Lopo instead, and bearing in mind that this could be from André's mother. In that time ( and not only), the Gonçalves, Rodrigues, Fernandes and Lopes are very abundant and as such quite difficult to research. You could ask to find out whether André Fernandes Lopes had a "testamento" (a will) or not. The name of the witness of his marriage, and of "padrinhos" of his sons and daughters baptisms may help a bit too. Unfortunately Ponta do Pargo is not one of my areas in Madeira. Hope this has clarified something, Best wishes, Miguel

One wonders how a family settles and then moves around the island and is not related to what is the original settler of Madeira? I have a web page for those who would like to peruse my research to date and possibly give me some direction as to where to look next. I cannot speak Portuguese nor can I read it (I know it is my fault-thank you) but maybe with some direction or hints as to who may help I can make the last connection on Madeira. I appreciate any assistance. My web page is: http://home.comcast.net/~Dplopes , check out the Lopes family portion that I am researching, there is a link on the page. 3. Teresa, Synthetising what is below 1) you have the several spellings of the name Rebelo: Rhabelo, Rhabello, Rabêlo, Rebêlo, Rebelo, Rebello, Revel, Ravel, Rabelais, 2) Besides the possible Portuguese origin of that name: from the Rio Douro area, (North of Portugal) . From there in the 15 th century some Rebelos (or at least one) settled in Madeira. Before that they may have come from Italy or France. and 3) the meaning of the name the name means someone who lives near a river. Or can also be a boat, like the rabelo from rio Douro. Or some part of a plow. Possible Germanic origin. 3. As I and some more people here are descended from the Vaz Rebelos, a well known family from the beginning of the 17 th century (Madeira) which settled mostly in S. António (Madeira) it's possible that your Rebelos come from them. Best, Miguel de Castro Henriques On Sat, Dec 17, 2011 at 7:33 PM, Teresa Baclaan <baclaant@gmail.com> wrote: > Hello.
