Hi! I am trying to find relatives in the de Freitas Braz clan! My great grand father was John Freitas Braz 1866 Madeira, Portugal who immigrated to Hawaii as a child! He died in 1937 in Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii! John Freitas Braz married Maria Cordoza de Jesus about 1887-1888 when she was 18! Maria was born May 20, 1869 in Madeira, Portugal and died Jan. 29, 1948! Maria's father was Francisco Gonzales Cordoza de Jesus, a whaler from Madeira, Portugal. My grandmother was Antonia Freitas Kung born Jan. 3, 1901 in Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii died June 21, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii! My grandmother was buried at Diamond Head Memorial Park! Any connection you can find would be greatly appreciated! Thank You! William Monk

Lou, If you click on www.railsoft.com/family/stirlingshire.jpg you will see a picture of the actual ship. There were two ships with the name Stirlingshire. The ship that your ancestors and mine sailed on was a smaller wooden hulled vessel built in New Zealand in 1848, pictured above. Her home port in 1885 - 1886 was Youghal, County Cork, Ireland, and her official number was 24868. The signal flag letters were PCNT. There is a book that has a great detail description of the voyage on that ship in 1885 by a Mr. Philip L. Pasquini. The book is call "Indentured Immigrants - A Jewish family odyssey from Madeira to the Sandwhich Islands". Hi again, I contacted the British Consulate and the English church as suggested but seems they don't or won't reply. Is there anyone on the list living in Funchal that may be able to help. I would like to find out if James Fulton who died 4 Apr 1855, Funchal, Madeira was buried there and if possible what the cause of death was. We got a copy of the death from England but told us very little. Regards Sue Greene New Zealand.

Sue, There is a British cemetery in Funchal. There is also a church, which I believe to be Anglican but it was just known as the English Church. The British kept their own records in Madeira at the time you mentioned. So, you can contact the British Consulate in Funchal or even the church. I am not sure the Madeiran Archives might be of some help, but you can try them at www.arquivo-madeira.org There is an English version of the site. Some siblings used Lopes as their surname, with spelling variations of either Lopes or Lopez, while others used Sardinha. I have not researched their family, but do know that their father was a Sardinha Lopes from Madeira, and their mother, who was a Bettencourt was from the Graciosa Azores. Don, if you scan/post the vital records that you can not read, it's possible that Madeira Group members could/would help to translate. I know from reading the e-mails on this list that the people on this list are much better at Genealogy than myself. I have traced my family tree to Ponta do Pargo and to Andres Fernandes Lopes born about 1620 in Ponta do Pargo. I was told by the researcher that the Tome 2 was missing from Ponta do Pargo and therefore we could not go any further back in time. I was also told and I find this hard to believe that the First Lopes on the Island and the city of Funchal is not related to Andres? One wonders how a family settles and then moves around the island and is not related to what is the original settler of Madeira? I have a web page for those who would like to peruse my research to date and possibly give me some direction as to where to look next. I cannot speak Portuguese nor can I read it (I know it is my fault-thank you) but maybe with some direction or hints as to who may help I can make the last connection on Madeira. I appreciate any assistance. My web page is: http://home.comcast.net?~Dplopes , check out the Lopes family portion that I am researching, there is a link on the page. Hi Don, The researcher is George Pacheco. The FHC is a great resource. I believe all of the Azores films are on permanent loan and there is a growing collection of films from Madeira on permanent loan as well. While not (yet) fluent, I can read and speak a decent amount of Portuguese. There are many times I just cannot read the handwriting on some of these documents. But George can, every time. I will look into Kathy doing some research for me. I am sure she will be better at it than I am. I wasn't sure of which researcher you were referring to but Kathy's name came up. I do have a Boucher line but they are not from the Taunton area to my knowledge. The first generation came from Canada and moved to New Bedford. One never knows if there is a connection until we compare the tree. Thanks for the information. He specializes in Portuguese Genealogy with his main focus on the Azores but he does Madeira as well. Here is his website info: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/ Funny that you have a connection to a Boucher line since I do as well. I wonder if they intersect? My connections are from the Taunton area. Don P Lopes Family Tree... Don, who is the person that actually did your research? Is she from Madeira, or related to you? Is there really a St Anthony's Church in New Bedford, MA? I was bapt at St. Anthony's in Lowell, MA. I noticed that one of your ancestors is a Sardinha... My maternal aunt by marriage is a Sardinha Lopes... she and her siblings were born in Lowell, MA.
