    2. Mary Alice Yost, There are many Andrade families in the Ponte do Sol area. Since I have the microfilm for Ponte do Sol (Baptismos 1893-1902) I will check it to see if there is a family there that resembles the names which you gave. I also have the microfilms for Madelena do Mar and Arco da Calheta for the same time period and will also check them. Best of luck Linda Teixeira Crandall

    3. I am looking for any information about this family of siblings: Gabriel Andrade, b 1898, came to US Mary Andrade, stayed in Madeira Louis Andrade, went first to Trinadad, then to US Frank Andrade, came to US Anthony Andrade, stayed in Madeira Joseph Andrade, went to Brazil and Louise and Constantine, both died young I think their parents were Jose and Maria Rosario Andrade. Any information would be helpful. -- Mary Alice Yost 15 miles south of Boston

    2. To anyone interested I have the ship Canopic's manifest from April 1914 and 1920. My grandparents came over from Madeira on that ship and my mother came over six years later. So if you think someone from Madeira came over around that time, I will be glad to look at the manifest and let you all know. Julie in Idaho

    2. Hi David, I'm really glad I was able to help you out. I don't know if there is a database out there for Brooklyn births in that time frame. You may have to mail away for a search. Have you tried the LDS library to see if it's on film first? I don't have any experience with Brooklyn and it's archives. An internet search should guide you where you need to go. Good luck! As I told you in my earlier e-mail, we have Francisca Agrella’s passport issued in Funchal in 1858 for passage to New York. We also have a document that said that Francisca and Alexander intended to go to the United States 1851 following their marriage. They were married in August 1851. The passport being issued in 1858 made it appear that their plans changed. The finding of this arrival record means that they did come to New York in 1851. The passport means that Francisca made a return visit to Madeira. I believe this would mean that the three sons listed as traveling with her would have been born in the United States. This also increases the possibility the Jorge name in the passport is the same persons as George W. DeGrella. The other two sons are Jose and Joao. The passport also lists "her niece Maria who is 22 years old". Do you know if there is a database for birth records and baptism records for Brooklyn between the 1850s? David DeGrella Tennessee, USA.

    1. Re: [PRT-MADEIRA] The noble ancestry of D. Isabel Teles de Menezes
    2. Hi Denise, Seeing that you are from New York, maybe you can direct me to some research resources. My grandfather died when my father was only 17 years old with very little family history being passed down. What got me started looking for my family roots was learning that my aunt had my great grandmother's passport. It was issued in Funchal in 1858. It lists three sons traveling with her. One may have been my grandfather as his name was George and the passport gives one name as Jorge; however, my grandfather gave his birth as 1863 in New York. This would have made him 11 years older than my grandmother. Her family objected to the marriage because of the difference in age. So he may have understated his age. We know nothing else about the family while in New York except to have found my grand grandfather on the 1860 census. (He was counted at his place of employment. I have been unable to find any census record on his family.) His name of Alexandre de Agrella was recorded as Alexander DeGrella. Also we found his enlistment in the Union Army in New York. There the name was recorded as DeGrilla. There are some DeGrellas living in New York City today. I have communicated with one of them. They all appear to be related. Their ancestors came from Madeira but went to Trinidad for a generation or two before coming to New York around 1910-1920. Any suggestions you can give will be appreciated. 1. Re: Arco da Calheta
    2. Linda, Yes, you had found the record of my GG grandparents marriage. While in Funchal , I was going to get a copy of that record for my documentation and also that of their parents. When I was unable to do that do to the archive being in the process of being moved, the staff took down the information and said they would mail them to me. I received them a few days ago. A bill for the copies was included. It was only .75 Euro. I have a little more than that in coins that I came back with. It might cost me a couple US dollars in postage to mail the three coins to the archive. Still the cost is reasonable. The main reason for wanting to visit the archive was to determine if they have the register of passports from the time my great grandparents had come to New York. We have my great grandmother's passport. Several years ago, I had ordered the register of passports film at the FNC. I wanted to see if my great grandfather had traveled with his family or if he had come earlier. About years are missing on the film. The archive in Funchal confirmed that the records are missing, it was not a failure to get the records on the film. I will surly take you up on your offer to look up records. Thanks a bunch. It seems as I read of the families and research that people on "the list" have done and their connections, I wonder why more don't have connections to Arco da Calheta. My family seems to have a very small gene pool so, therefore, I don't have branches that extend to other parts of the island. It's a wonder they all turned out O.K. LOL Linda Teixeira Crandall

    1. Re: Sao Braz
    2. Linda, We think we visited Sao Braz. Being under the impression that there is only one church in Arco da Calheta, we never thought about verifying the name of the church that we visited. It was a large church, similar in style on the outside to the Se in Funchal. The steeple had a clock on all four sides. It was in what appeared to be the business center of Arco da Calheta. A cemetery was nearby. In front of the church was a plaza overlooking the sea, but not right on the sea. The road signs along the way were easy to follow to Arco da Calheta but there was no sign indicating that one is coming into the town. We did ask to confirm that we were indeed in Arco da Calheta. So there was no apparent way to distinguish the hamlets. A big mistake I made while in Arco da Calheta was not leaving my name, address, etc. with one person we met. He was introduced to us because he could speak English. He had lived in the US for 17 years. His daughter continues to live in the US having married here. The gentleman showed me pictures of his daughter and grandchildren. I should have asked him to ask his daughter to contact me. What a wonderful connection she would be with Arco da Calheta. 2. Several years ago, my daughter said we should go to Madeira. So we set a date of 2005. We kept our promise to ourselves--having since been married and having since bought a house did not deter my daughter. Four of us went in April. We had a great time and saw many wonders of nature. We went to Arco da Calheta, where my great grandfather was from. In Funchal we found the Road of the New Bridge. My great grandmother's family lived on this street. We had no luck finding any relative, but I did not have enough information to ready do that. We were able to meet with Paulo, the member of this list who is from Madeira. We had a long enjoyable conversation. We took lots of pictures. We would have taken more but both digital cameras we had quick working, so old fashion film was used a lot. Driving the winding roads on the hills is an adventure in itself. The people were open and friendly. We visited the Archive but they were in the process of moving and we could not get some marriage records we had hoped to get while there. On our way to Madeira, we stayed a few days in Lisbon. Lisbon is also well worth the visit. David Tennessee, USA

    2. Hello Paulo, I had told you about finding a DeGrella from Madeira in the 1860 census for the area where the Madeira Exiles settled in the United States. You may recall that I said that this person may have actually been de Agrella and just like my ancestors the census taker misunderstood the name and wrote the name as DeGrella. In case you are interested, you can see that census at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmaga/census-morg60/1.html Another related site gives the names of early Portuguese members of the First Presbyterians in this same area: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmorgan/church-port.htm There appears to be Jardims among them.
