Hi Janette, Thank you, never thought of using Western Union. Good idea... Bob, Here's the link for the arquivo's website http://www.arquivo-madeira.org. They have the marriage database online and baptism database for Porto Santo online too. Hopefully other areas will be available soon. Select 'Base de Dados' on the left-hand side of the homepage under Servicos de Comunicacao. Searching the database can take a while - it's a little quircky. You need to try it your search in various ways if at first you get no results. It only accepts spelling with the required accents and cedillas, so I copy the names such as Antonio (which has the little accent on the o and Mendonca (which has a cedilla on the c) and then cut and paste that into the search. Or you can just type in the first three letters of the Name, say Anto and see what it comes up with. When all else has failed I have actually (over a course of hours) gone through the database under the correct letters to find the listing I wanted. Happy searching! Just as a reminder, I met Paulo Jardim this past April while in Funchal. Geology research is not his profession. He is like most of us. He joined this list because he was researching his own ancestry and helps others when he can. In addition to employment, he may be taking university classes. So his time may be limited. Greetings! On 14 Dec 2005, the Madeira DNA Project was established to coordinate DNA results for participants of Madeiran heritage. The new website can be viewed at: http://www.ourfamilyorigins.com/madeira/dna.htm José Fernandes, a native Madeiran, provided the beautiful photos of Madeira. If you've already tested with Family Tree DNA or thru National Geographic Genographic Project (or any other testing firm), you're welcome to add your results to the project. New participants are always welcome to join too! A new Google Earth mapping feature was added in January by Family Tree DNA to view participants' ancestral locations: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/madeira Click "Satellite" and then the '+' and zoom in four times for a view of Madeira. Then click on each of the red dots. The site also contains Madeiran genealogical and historical links. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Saudações, Katherine Borges Madeira DNA Project Co-administrator
Dear Luis B (é verdade! Nevou aqui em Lisboa no Domingo passado. Mas nada que se compare com o nevão de 1954) Ok! The fact of not speaking the local LANGUAGE might have been a reason for not wanting their sons to speak their mother language at home, and thus, not wanting to tell them they were Portuguese (so that they would speak english like everybody else). Luis K W Lisboa-Portugal ---------- > From: Luis Beal <luisbeal@yahoo.com> > To: PRT-MADEIRA-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [PRT-MADEIRA] little story, from rootsweb review > Date: Sábado, 4 de Fevereiro de 2006 0:50 > > Luis, > Yes, one should be proud of his/her nationality. But also when people immigrate they worry about being treated differently because they don't talk or act like everyone else. The way many dealt with the situation, and are are still dealing with nowadays here in the US, was by either not talking about their roots or not speaking or teaching their native language to their children. This way when the kids grew up speaking like everyone else they were supposedly treated the same and had as many chances in life as all other kids. We see this with Mexican, Asians, Portuguese, and other nationalities. There is a fear of being treated like minorities. Being foreign myself I understand the feeling and need but I do not agree that hidding the origins or not teaching their children their native language helps. On the contrary, I believe that by teaching children a second language we are opening more doors and oportunities to them than trying to make them grow up like everyone else. B! > ut that > is just my opinion. > On the other hand, these children who are now grown up, and their children, are usually very proud of their roots. I have met many women and men who told me they were portuguese, and silly me thinking that being portuguese meant you were born in portugal and spoke the language, and I find out that they are grand-children or great grand children of native portuguese people. Usually they do not speak the language, or if the do it is just a little bit and it is because they are interested and love the language and made an effort to learn. They are wonderful. So, what the portuguese immigrants lacked in pride their descendants more than make up for it. That is why we have so many wonderful people on this list. > Luis Beal > PS- E' verdade que nevou ai no fim de semana passado? Tinha um artigo ontem online que disse isso.
