Hi list members, These are the names I have so far in my heritage Mendonca, Gois, Vasconcellos, da Camarra, Gaviao. At this point most seem to be from Porto Santo....if you have any connections to these names/porto santo, please email me...we may have a connection somewhere along the line. I just checked with the Oakland Family History Center, and only two of the many films that I ordered years ago, on "indefinite loan," are still there. It's based on usage, if the films remain at a given FHC, even if one has paid the "indefinite loan," fee. Since we moved away, I haven't kept track of them, but if anyone does research at the Oakland Temple FHC here's what I was told on the phone is still there. Film # 1153985 - Casamentos Igreja da Espirito Santo Calheta, Madeira 1860-1911 Film # 1111027 - Resumos da Casamentos Igreja da Espirito Santo Calheta 1861-1914 item 2. If list members will post the names of individuals that they are researching from Madeira, I can check what I have in my computer from the many pedigree charts that Sr. Luis de Sousa Mello, the retired Director of the Madeira Archives prepared for me. Julie, It is possible, I will check when I get home this evening and see, most of the immediate Abreu family I have is from the Ponto do Sol area, however, there are distant Abreus from elsewhere on the island. Pitta was a common name in Ponta do Sol and very common in Canhas, Madeira. I primarily research Pitta family lines. But I'm also interested in de Pontes from São Vicente and de Gouvea from São Gonçalo although I've done little research on them. Bob/Pat I believe we have spoken in the past with regard to the Pitta name and also the Abreu name. As my family (Abreu/Pitta) is from Ponto do Sol and all resided in Lowell Ma, I have inquired to my grandmother whether she remembers any Pittas from Tilden street, there were Pittas that lived on Jewett street and Caroline street in Centerville section of Lowell, I will get back to you on what I find. Bob, thank you. I'm going to try and locate a census record for Antonio Rodrigues Pitta, with a Tilden Street, Lowell MA address. Another online person, seems to think that the attendants in my parent's wedding picture, is the same couple in the unknown bride and groom wedding picture. It's a long shot, but it's hard for me to believe that the attendants waited 10 years before getting married, but I guess it's possible. Thank you! Hi, I was delivered by a Dr Pitta in NB Mass in 1940. He was our doc for years.
For those interested in Ponta do Sol and Canhas, I have the following films on indefinite loan at the Oakland Family History Center: Ponta do Sol - 1109895, 1109896, 1109897, 1162037, 1162038, 1162039, 1109899, 1109900, 1162041, 1162042, 1109903. Canhas - 1102528, 1102529, 1102530, 1102531, 1102532, 1102533, 1155201, 1155792, 1155793, 1103859, 1102534, 1102535, 1155794, 1103859, 1102537, 1103858, 1155795, 1155795. I used to visit the FHC a couple times a week. Circumstances now limit my visits to once or twice a month. If you're not in a hurry, I will attempt to do lookups for you as I am able to do so. If you are researching family lines that have Pita or Pitta connections, I may already have information in my database for you. This idea of helping each other is great. I have some films from Machico on extended loan at my local FHC. I would be happy to look for something in particular. I cannot remember specific time frames for the films I have but basically I have marriage records for Nossa Senhora de Conceicao in Machico from about 1640s to mid 1740s and also some baptism records from the same time frame. As I am sure you all know, some films are relatively clear and legible, some are awful! It just makes the hunt all the more interesting. ;-) Mary da Silva Frost

As many of you who order microfilms at your local FHC, you know of the price increase that occured earlier this year. In order to save some of us money, I would like to ask if we, as a group, would be willing to do "look-ups" for others who might not have certain films where family might be found. I know how frustrating it can be to look for the marriage of a couple, order film, and then discover they are not found on that one film. It would save all of us money if we knew someone else who might have access to a film/village at their disposal (indefinite loan) who could look up a date for us. Therefore, I would like to let the LIST know that I have the following films on indefinite loan at my local FHC (Family History Center) and I would be delighted to look up any family for you. In turn, I hope you will also share with the LIST what you have access to. Arco da Calheta Baptismos 1682-1911 Casamentos 1598-1911 Ponte do Sol Baptismos 1893-1910 Madelena do Mar Baptismos 1890-1910 Casamentos 1707-1766 Canhas Baptismos 1708-1780 Thanks Linda Teixeira Crandall
Thank you Linda. I think that is a wonderful idea. I want to go to the FHL but the trafic is so fast and dangerous on the freeway next to it that I have hesitated to do so. There are films I want to reorder to search what I missed earlier. Will print out your list and place it in a very special place.
