Mitochondrial portraits of the Madeira and Acores archipelagos witness different genetic pools of its settlers: http://www.simurl.com/create.php For those of you who have mtDNA tested in the Azores or Madeira DNA Projects, we will be comparing your mtDNA to the results of this study. So far, the Pacheco (Sao Jorge) participant in the Azores Project has a close match with someone in the Azores and Portugal. Participants in the Madeira DNA Project closely match H-28, H-32, H-33 in the Brehm study in the following regions: 4 in Madeira, 1 in Azores, and exact matches in Portugal, Spain, Europe and North Africa. (PLEASE NOTE: HVR1 compared only and 519C is excluded) ~Katherine Borges Azores & Madeira DNA Projects Co-administrator
I occasionally hear of the existence of a book titled "Families of Madeira" purportedly listing Madeiran families early-on (back to the 1400s). Does this book really exist, and if so, where can I obtain a copy?
Im forwarding this email in response to bpittas email requesting info on the book. I received this email via another forum I belong to. The manuscript is also available at NESOS (www.nesos.net <http://www.nesos.net/> ) but is in script which is often difficult to decipher. Hope this is of help to all. Professor Silva has a couple of publications that focus on the Island of Madeira, that are available for purchase online. About the Author ~ Prof. J. Donald (Don) Silva writes stories about the Madeira Islands where his family has lived since the 15th century. He was educated at the University of New Hampshire and taught English there for many years. Prof. Silva is a writer, poet, mountain climber, swimmer and gardener. He is a stone cutter and stone mason. "An Annotated Bibliography and Internet Guide for The Madeira Islands," is available at http://www.geocities.com/papagaia2/jdsilva.html ~~~~ Prof. Silva's newest publication titled, "Black Kestrel," is a story of the Madeira Islands. Josè Abreu can't live with the feudal landlord who dominates him, his family, and the land. He rebels against the landlord only to find himself facing induction into the militia for six years and the relentless authority of the church. Black Kestrel portrays the conditions that plagued young Madeiran Portuguese in the late 19th century during the reign of King Dom Carlos. José's family resents his individualism and refuses to help him escape the persecutions of the landlord and the church. With the help of his friends-- Rosa the neighborhood girl who falls in love with him, Pistola the village shopkeeper and Talbot the Englishman who sails the sloop with its magnificent white sails, he makes his way toward freedom. The Kestrels are independent birds living with skill and courage and this young man lives his life against great odds to pursue his dream. Hello everyone: A while back someone out there was asking questions about the surname "Senha". I don't remember the exact questions but I believe that there was a question about it actually being a name, and if so, its roots, etc. At the time I had not heard of it, but as an American non-native speaker, I did not think I had anything of value to add to the discussion. I am currently looking at microfilm for Machico, Madeira and I came across a marriage record index from 1639 with the bride listed as Catarina Nunes de Senha. If someone out there would like me to look at that particular record and get info from it, I would be happy to help. I should be back in that film later on this week. So-just let me know. For some reason these didn't go through. This is Email #1 and Email #2 Hi all, Have you heard of the Korean War Project? I read about this on the Genealogue blog and I thought it might be something genealogists in our online community might like to participate in. The Korean War Project has information on Korean War MIA, KIA, and WIA. Due to changing times, the remains of many of these soldiers have now been located and turned over to the US. Here's the problem: Current family members are needed to do DNA testing to prove identity. On the website, http://www.koreanwar.org/html/finding_the_families.html, there is a database of soldiers who remains must be confirmed but family hasn't been found. Your skills as a genealogist can come in mighty handy here! They need people who can take a soldier's name and locality, search through records, and try to find information on family. THEY ARE NOT ASKING YOU TO COMMUNICATE WITH THAT FAMILY. Your job is to find possible leads. Genealogists do this everyday while searching the census, then obituaries and telephone directories. The database is searchable by name. You can also pick individuals by locality or branch of service. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN: I have contacted the Korean War Project coordinator. Islandroutes.com is adopting the soldiers from the state of Hawaii. There are 45 soldiers who they know died in Korea. But, they can't find their families. If they locate the families they can do DNA tests and see if they match to the returned remains. I am asking for volunteers who have access to Hawaiian records who can research forawrd rather than backwards. I will post all the names and data to a message board. Volunteers will work through each person to see if we can take the family from the 1930 census to current times. It's not as easy working forward, but I think if several of us pool our efforts we can at least identify a few of these soldiers. Findings by each researcher will be posted to the message board. Then when we have a link to a current family member it will be fowarded on to the project coordinator. IS THERE ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER TO DO RESEARCH? If so, please contact me at islandrou... <http://groups.google.com/groups/unlock?msg=89f12cafd95710e0&_done=/group/IslandRoutes/browse_thread/thread/b24b89039b37b4bb>@islandroutes.com I did a couple of 1930 census searches last night. I was able to find most of the soldiers fairly easily. The challenge will be searching for the siblings and finding out what happened to their lines. Thanks for considering this offer, Mel Site Manager, www.islandroutes.com <http://www.islandroutes.com> Volunteer, GenealogyForum.org ====== Email #2 More details: Okay, folks! GenealogyForum.org is allowing us to use their message board for the project. Anyone who would like to do a little research please go to: http://z9.invisionfree.com/GenealogyForum/index.php?act=idx You will need to be a registered member to post (registration is free) You will find the project at the bottom of the message board under: Korean War MIA Project There is a folder for Hawaii. In that folder are individual entries for each soldier. Your job (if you so chose) is to try to find that person and their kin in the census, obituaries, and other records so we can find living relatives. If you do find something (or even don't), post to that person's entry so that all the research can be seen for that person. The next person that tries can see what you've done. If you need help getting into the boards, let me know as I'm the message board administrator at GF.org. As a side note... I was looking over the list for Oakland and much to my surprise I found Jerry Ursini Jr who married the daughter of one of my grandfather's cousins! Hope the family responds to my email. That would be one guy resolved. Thanks for any help folks would like to offer! Hello all, As you may know, my life has been upside down this year. I'm having a bit of a problem coming up with article ideas as my brain is just plain tired! I'm putting out this offer... Do you have an interesting story about your ancestors? It doesn't have to be earth shattering like getting nobel peace prize. All it needs to be is related to Portuguese or Portuguese Hawaiian genealogy, heritage, or history. If so, write up your story and email it to me. If accepted, your article will be posted on www.islandroute.com <http://www.islandroute.com> I know that everyone has an interesting story in their past. It might be a story of how your ancestors came to Hawaii, the jobs they did on the sugar plantation, how your ancestor owned a small business, how your grandma kept the family together, how your great aunt made the best bread, what a story teller your uncle was, an heirloom that was handed down through generations, how it was for you to find your ancestor's records in Hawaii, and so forth. The requirements: 1. Your article should be at least 3 paragraphs. (It can be longer than that but that's the minimum) 2. It must be related to Portuguese or Portuguese Hawaiian genealogy, history, and heritage. 3. It must be clean (but it can be funny!) 4. Articles may be edited for spelling errors or grammar to make them easier to read. 5. If you have a photograph/graphic to go with it, tell me about it in your email, but don't include it. Greetings all, Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that Family Tree DNA announced yesterday that they've purchased genetic genealogical testing company, DNA-Fingerprint: http://www.familytreedna.com/pdf/Press-release%20DNA_Fingerprint.pdf DNA-Fingerprint does extended marker, forensic, as well as other specialized DNA testing. See the following ISOGG chart for examples: http://www.isogg.org/extractionchart.htm Regarding the "batch discount" that's listed on the chart, the deadline for the last DNA-Fingerprint batch is July 25. This is GREAT news for Family Tree DNA clients since we'll have a broader range of products to choose from, along with being able to compare results from different sources in the same database. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have! Katherine
Marcia, Your great-grandparentes *obviously* anglicized their portuguese names. Marsial could originally be MARÇAL (I hope you can read «ç». it's a «c» with a «,» i.e. M a r c, a l). I have no doubt it should be CALDEIRA. Calderia doesn't exist in Portuguese. I keep what I told you before. You must find down there, in S.A., where they were from. Other wise, it's almost impossible to know where they came from (they could come from almost any where in the World: from Goa-India, from Macau-China, from the Madeira islands, from Cape Verde, from mainland Portugal, etc.). Hi Patricia My name is Marcia. I live in South Africa. I have been in contact with some of the members from the list. I have recently moved house and only came back online yesterday. I now see an e-mail that you sent out to the list saying that list members could post the names of individuals that they are researching. Would it be possible for you to have a look and see if you can find the following:- (a) Marsial Vieira Serena (my great-grandfather - born circa 1901 in Madeira); (b) Maria Calderia Serena (my great-grandmother - I managed to check the spelling of the name "Calderia" on my great-grandfather's death notice in the archives here in South Africa and she herself spelt it that way when she filled in the death notice details - I at one stage thought it was "Caldeira" but obviously not). Thanks very much. July 1 is Madeira day and that includes all communities and their descendants across the world. So I wish a happy Madeira Day to you all. We have much to celebrate and to be proud of our ancestors. For those of you who may not know, July 1 was chosen by the Madeiran government because on this day Zargo and his crew entered for the first time the Bay of Machico. On July 2 1420(?) they went on shore and said mass. For Canadians we also celebrate Canada Day, a very Happy Canada Day. Could someone please look up this family and give me any information about them? Jose D'Andrade and Maria Rosario had a son, Gabriel Andrade, born 9 Sep 1898 in Funchal, Madeira. Gabriel married Helene Rodrigues, born 1905 in Funchal. Thanks!
All - At great personal expense, Pat Corbera has stocked the Oakland Family History Center with an impressive list of films on "indefinite loan" pertaining to Calheta. Pat no longer lives in the area and is therefore unavailable for lookups. However, the films are available for those of you who are able to visit the Center. The complete list is: Calheta, Funchal 1103282 1103753 1103754 1103849 1103850 1103851 1103852 1111027 1111028 1153982 1153983 1153985 Estreito da Calheta, Funchal 1103380 1103381 847713 847714 1156484 1102716 1156485
