Al, Sorry but that is all I know. My maternal family comes from Ribeira Brava also. My mother was born there. Antonio could be a brother to Inacio but I won't know until I get the film from LDS where they were married and find out who their parents were. My mother died two years ago and I wished I had asked more questions while she was alive but she did not remember much. My grandparents emigrated to New Bedford MA and she and her baby brother were left there. My uncle lived with the paternal grandmother and my mother lived with an aunt. She came to NB Mass when she was 7 years old so she did not remember too much. Julie
Hi, I also got family from Ribeira Brava, Madeira with the name D' Abreu. Maria D'encarnacao b. 1850, her parents were Antonio D'Abreu and Jesuina Rosa. Maria married Manuel Pereira around 1866 and they moved to Hawaii in 1884 aboard the ship Daca. They lived in Hilo Hawaii. Any relationship to your D'Abreu's? Al
According to my mom, my great-grandmother's maiden name was D'Abreu (De Abreu). Her full names were Maria Calderia (Caldeira) Serena (married surname). Her mother's first name was apparently Mathilde. My great-grandmother's second name seems to have been mis-spelt. My grandmother's name was Maria Conceicao D'Abreu. She was born 1887. Her father was Inacio D'Abreu and her mother was Maria Augusta. That is all I have. I do plan to go to the LDS and order the film for the marriage license of my great-grandfather and ggmother. I will know more who their parents were then. Julie Gerren
The best thing is to learn some key portuguese words that will help you in your research. I know of no place that will translate from one language to another in a decent form, unless you pay a real person to do it. I have personally tried the online web page translators and it was pretty sad. One important thing to know is that in portuguese everything, from living to innanimate objects, has a gender they are either male or female. For something to be an "it" it has to be unknown, or not yet understood. As a rule any word that ends in "a" is female: amiga, irma, filha, mesa, rua..., and any word that ends in "o" is male: filho, vermelho, joelho... There are exceptions to the rule, of course, and sometimes you will find words like mae, pai, arvore...that end in either a or o. The key to figure out gender is right before the word: a mae (female), o pai (male), aquela arvore (female). Now for genealogy research look for these key words: Filha - daughter Filho - son Mae - Mother Pai - Father Avo' - Grandmother Avo^ - Grandfather (the ^ is on top of the o) Materno - maternal (you'll see stuff like avo' materna- maternal grandmother) Paterno - Paternal Pais - Parents Avo's - Grandparents Neta de - Granddaughter of Neto de - Grandson of Igreja - Church Paroquia - Parish Freguesia - Parish/ subdivision of the area Nasceu - Was born Morreu - Died Casou - Married Sexo - Sex Feminino - Female Masculino - Male Months of the year: Janeiro, Fevereiro, Marco, Abril, Maio, Junho, Julho, Agosto, Setembro, Outubro, Novembro, Dezembro. I would say knowing these will help you pinpoint where the info you need is on any record. Whenever you find a record you think may be important but you are not sure because of words you cannot understand just post it on the list and someone might be able to help translate it. It will be easier to learn some of the language than to spend time looking for translators as most records you will find will be in Portuguese, of course. Good luck, Luis Beal Marcia & Roland <roland1@wol.co.za> wrote: Dear List I also noticed that the Nesos e-books are in Portuguese, and this unfortunately does not help me as I do not speak the language. I have done a search on "118" which came back with a number of listings for "Serena" and it just gives me telephone numbers. I would like to write letters to the people concerned in order to find out whether by any chance they could be related to my great-grandparents. Hi Katherine, When I clicked on it, it simple took me to simurl.com homepage... I looked for the article, but didn't find it. I did a Yahoo search and located a website created by Prof. Brehm, very interesting individual to say the least. Thank you for your quick reply... I'll check out the Madeira mtDNA page. >From additional testing I'm now a H1... waiting for HVR2 test results.
