I never got the accents to work properly in ms Word or PAF from this original message. However, I found that this works in MS Word and PAF: Keyboard shortcuts for international characters For keyboard shortcuts in which you press two or more keys simultaneously, the keys to press are separated by a plus sign (+) in Microsoft Word Help. For keyboard shortcuts in which you press one key immediately followed by another key, the keys to press are separated by a comma (,). To type a lowercase character using a key combination that includes the SHIFT key, hold down the CTRL+SHIFT+symbol keys simultaneously, and then release them before typing the letter. Press CTRL+` (ACCENT GRAVE), the letter à, è, ì, ò, ù, À, È, Ì, Ò, Ù CTRL+' (APOSTROPHE), the letter á, é, í, ó, ú, ý Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú, Ý CTRL+SHIFT+^ (CARET), the letter â, ê, î, ô, û Â, Ê, Î, Ô, Û CTRL+SHIFT+~ (TILDE), the letter ã, ñ, õ Ã, Ñ, Õ CTRL+SHIFT+: (COLON), the letter ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ, Ä, Ë, Ï, Ö, Ü, Ÿ CTRL+SHIFT+@, a or A å, Å CTRL+SHIFT+&, a or A æ, Æ CTRL+SHIFT+&, o or O œ, Œ CTRL+, (COMMA), c or C ç, Ç CTRL+' (APOSTROPHE), d or D ð, Ð CTRL+/, o or O ø, Ø ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+? ¿ ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+! ¡ CTRL+SHIFT+&, s ß The character code, ALT+X The Unicode character for the specified Unicode (hexadecimal) character code. Hi Margaret.... I have a few ancestors that comes from Campanario...among them are: Simao Gomes Guedes that married in 1626 Ines Fernandes. That Simao is the son of Luis Gomes Guedes Filho married in 1585 Francisca Duarte (from Tabua, where i have many ancestors by the way). Ines Fernandes was the daugther of Manuel Fernandes and Ana Goncalves (both from Campanario) Among my Abreu ancestors are Manuel Abreu from Ponta do Sol (not far from Campanario) that amrried with leonor Rodrigues and are the parents of Filipa Sao Tiago (born in 1689, my ancestor) and her brother Antonio de Abreu. Also have some Abreu de Macedo from Ribeira Brava and Abreu de Sa from Lugar da Serra. >From Faria family, this part comes from Sao Martinho (Funchal) in the early 17th century. do you have your whole family tree done?? until which year?? Im sure we probably are related in some point...the task is just find out with which ancestor :) Leandro

`Leandro: Here in Oakland, Ca., there were many Telo, Telles, Drumonds, Nobrega, de Nobregas and more. They were our neighbors. All from Madeira. Sao Vicente, Machico, Santa Ana, Porto Santo, Camacha, however they have all passed away. Many went to Hawaii and on to California and Oakland and attended the same church. We had a large Portuguese community here and attended many of the same festas together. Madeira picnics, and they formed their own lodge. They were a very happy group and their children met and married and so it is an extended group of families. The Madeira lodge is still active however not as large as it once was. The elders are gone and the young people donot come from Madeira to perpetua the lodge. Their number is dwindling however there is one lady who is quite active and is 94. They came here and were very actilve in this area. We now have a Portuguese mayor in San Leandro and we are very happy with the work that he has done. My grandmother in Campanario was a d'Abreu Faria however I didnot see a connection in your e-mail. Difficult to trace. No it definitely doesn't sound easy, but at the same time life on the other hand seemed so sophisticated when you look at the newspapers from the 1800s. -----Original Message----- From: prt-madeira-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:prt-madeira-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Patricia Corbera Sent: Saturday, February 03, 2007 3:46 PM To: prt-madeira@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PT-MADEIRA] FW: Drumond family Hi Janette, I hadn't heard the story about what you mentioned. Hi Pat..... sorry for the mistake.... Viatl actually married in 1706, his parents Vasco Moniz de Meneses and Dona Crispina de Meneses were married in 1684. This Vasco is the son of Capitain Antonio de Figueiro and Ana de Gouveia (being Ana from Machico). Thank you for the information about Sr Luis de Mello. I will contact him by nexty week definitely. Leandro
Hi Pat, I've heard the same thing, but as yet haven't found any documentation. I've looked on nesos which has a couple of newspapers on file but nothing from the 1850s. Another story I've heard and has been referenced in 1950s article on the nesos site was that at one time the island -can't recall if it was porto santo or Madeira, was constantly under attack from the morocco and that at one point only about 7 or 8 people actually survived on the island. Anyone know anything more about this. Leandro, I was hoping that you would beable to find a connection with one of the Figueiros listed. You wrote the following, "now my task is link this Vital Escorcio Drumond (married in 1684)..." I found a marriage record for a Vital Escorcio Drumond married in 1706 to Maria Teixeira de Andrade... parish of Sao Vicente... is this the same Vital that you noted as being married in 1684? Nowadays Porto Santo is an holiday destination, with wonderful beaches and a lot of quiet. http://www.portosanto.nl/indexpt.html "Porto Santo, onde a vida é lenta" (where the life goes quietly). :-) Luis K W Lisboa-Portugal ---------------------- MENSAGEM ORIGINAL ---------------------- In about 1940 I saw a Portuguese film about Porto Santo. Porto Santo was an extremely dry land and the folks were out in the desert like land making trenches for planting vegetables. Then would stop in place at noon, recite the Angelis, praying for rain, and there was not a cloud in the sky. It was not a vegatative land and life was quite dificult. This makes me wonder how there could be wealth there and homes with servants. One reads that the governor, Perestrelo actually lived in Madeira and so did Christopher and his wife. We cannot get any definate conclusions from the meager infomatton we get. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scot Austin" scotaustin@comcast.net To: prt-madeira@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 9:13 PM Subject: Re: [PT-MADEIRA] FW: Drumond family John Drummond was the son of Sir John Drummond, the brother of the queen of Scotland and Elizabeth Sinclair, the daughter of Prince Henry Sinclair, Prince of the Orkney Islands and Earl of Caithness.
