For those who may be researching family that came to USA and lived in Fall River, Massachusetts, the website below has online links to yearbooks from the high school from Fall River- BM Durfee. I have relatives who are in some of the old yearbooks (1920s). In the course of searching for my family, I saw many Portuguese names. The Portuguese connection has been known, or inferred, but the evidence was sketchy. They were all over the place early. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue M. Hey folks.... I just did my update on my database at _www.ancestry.com_ (http://www.ancestry.com) and was thinking that maybe it would be interesting for all of us here to exchange information and data that we have, in that way maybe we can enhance our own family trees and share information. So...if anyone of you want to visit my tree, just send me your email address and i send the invitation and also please id like to be able to see yours as well. My family mainly comes from Seixal, Sao Vicente, Calheta (Arco, Estreito and Calheta) and Ribeira Brava. Also maybe some in Machico (but dates way back in 1600;s) ok...looking forward to hear from you all Leandro

I don't know; I'm getting your emails, so if you don't get two of this, you may want to contact rootsweb or aol to see if there's a problem (make sure aol has the addresses on file to be sure their spam filter isn't deleting them). I have records for infants baptized at Ponta do Sol about 1860 which show their parents to be residents of Sitio Entre Caminhos. I suspect this is a neighborhood within walking distance of the church. Does anyone know the location of this place or how it can be learned? I have a detailed Calheta map that shows most places where there is population, but nowhere is this place mentioned. Please reply if you have information or interest. Donald Rodrigues
A while back I had asked if anyone knew of the church of Sao Mame de Infista. In case anyone else wants to know- I found out that it is located in Matosinhos, which is near Porto on the mainland. I was able to determine that my great grandparents were indeed married there though neither of them were members of that parish. She happened to be living and employed there at the time. She was from Madeira and he was from Porto. You never know where you may find your ancestors. :-) Mary da Silva Frost .
Hi Mary.... that's exactly been aproblem to fin Ana de Gouveia records. Actually i cant find neither her or her husband (Antonio de Figueiro). The only reference that i have about them is on the marriage of their son Vasco moniz de meneses in 1684 when in the certificate states the names of the groom's parents and say that Ana de Gouveia is from Machico. At first i assumed that Antonio de Figueiro was from Sao Vicente, once his son was marrying there and afterwards the family settled there, but after so many researcinh i cant find any one in Sao Vicente prior of 1684 with surnames Figueiro, telo de meneses or moniz de meneses.... so i guess he comes as well from Machico or some area near that, once those family names as you said are very influential in the area....to be honest im a little lost in this because i've been trying for months to find a way to extend this search, but so far all dead end. :( Leandro
Leandro - Here's what I have: Manuel Francisco de Pontes, born February 1851, married Filomena Rosa, born 16 January 1850, on 2 April 1883 in São Vicente. Both were born in São Vicente. Manuel was the son of João Francisco de Pontes and Maria Antónia. Filomena was the daughter of José de Gouvea and Maria Rosa. Hello! I am also researching in Machico and Sao Vicente - I am looking for information on the family of Carolina Franco daughter of Manuel Franco and Francisca de Jesus from Machico. They immigrated to Hawaii from Madeira in 1883. Manuel was the son of Antonio Franco "Grilo" and Ana da Silva. Francisca was the daughter of Manuel Franco and Maria de Jesus. >From Sao Vicente, I am also researching Theresa Pestana D'Assumpcao. She is the daughter of Manuel Pestana D'Assumpcao and Virgilina Maria. They also immigrated to Hawaii from Madeira in 1883. Manuel was the son of Manuel Pestana D'Assumpcao and Feliciana de Jesus. Virgilina was the daughter of Jose Filipe and Claudina Maria. If anyone out there is connected to me, please email me back. Leandro: The first time that the name Gouveia shows up in my line is Manuel Alvares de Vares Gouveia who married Beatriz Rodrigues in Machico in 1667. His parents were Joao Correia Miranda and Maria Simoa. There is a strong possibility that they were from Santa Cruz, but I have not yet pursued those records. Some of my family names from the mid 1600s were: Antunes, Alves/Alvres/Alvares, Burgos, Dias, das Neves, Fernandes, Franca, Goncalves, Lopes, Rodrigues Saldanha, and Vaz/Vasconcelos. It has been impression that the names of Drummond/Doromundo, Telo de Meneses and Monis de Meneses were associated with prestige in Machico. I have found a few distant relatives who married people from those lines, but so far, no direct ancestors. Do you know the names of Ana's parents? I do not see her marriage record in the Machico marriage database. Did they marry elsewhere? What do you think? Yes!!! Im definitely looking for the GOUVEIA's being Ana de Gouveia that married in the mid 1600's with Capitain Antonio de FIGUEIRO. This Antonio also belongs to the TELO DE MENESES, DRUMMOND and also MONIZ DE MENESES. This couple moved to Sao Vicente where his son Vital Escorcio Drumond married Crispina de Meneses in 1684 and so on.... Hi Bob.... unfortunately all the records that i have from S Vicente so far are from mid 1700's backwards, because after that my family moved to Seixal :( so im sorry i cannot trace any names, but pls let me know if you have anything else that dates even further. At the moment im doing the whole records of Seixal, but Sao Vicente most likely i will do the next, so watch this space :) Leandro
Hi Bob.... i have tons of de Ponte's in my family :) i think this surname was mainly very common, because a lot, really a lot of people seems to adopt it Let me know if you have any in Seixal also Leandro
