Denise, It's still a controversial matter. In the old documents he is both called Tristão Vaz and Tristão da Ilha and only later (by some of the XVII th century chroniclers), Tristão Vaz Teixeira. Anyway it seems that he probably was Teixeira, as he was cousin of João Rodrigues Teixeira, o Gordo (FCR). And he was also cousin of a Portocarreiro. Curiously he was granted a new coat of arms, a silver Phoenix burning in flames over an azure field, but his descedants used only the coat of arms of the Teixeiras, arguably from Branca Teixeira, his wife. Apart of that I think that almost every Madeiran, who has at least two full generations of madeirans behind him, descends from him , -) BTW João Rodrigues Teixeira, o Gordo, was one of the first setllers with the highest status: FCR.
